SECRETOS DE VESTUARIO: DETRÁS DE 'BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER'

Cómo les gusta a las nuevas generaciones revivir las tendencias de los 90's... esta época tiene un je ne se quoi que te conquista, sobre todo, si hablamos de mom jeans, crop tops y, cómo no, de series. Y si hay una serie icónica que sigue siendo una de las más vistas en pleno 2021 esa es, ni más ni menos, que 'Buffy, cazavampiros'. 

How much the new generations love to revive the trends of the 90's... this era has a 'je ne se quoi' that conquers you, especially if we talk about mom jeans, crop tops and, of course, tv series. And if there is an iconic series that is still one of the most watched in the middle of 2021 that is, without a doubt, 'Buffy the Vampire Slayer'.

Sarah Michelle Gellar es la actriz que da vida a Buffy, una chica aparentemente normal que va al instituto, tiene amigos, pero también esconde un gran secreto: caza a vampiros. Y si la trama de por si no fuese cautivante, 'Buffy, cazavampiros' cuenta con un as bajo la manga que marcó un antes y un después en las producciones de finales de los 90's y principios de los 00's: el vestuario. Además de ser una de las series que crearon tendencia a la hora de desarrollar los personajes femeninos en producciones posteriores, el vestuario de esta serie era tan único y característico que logró dejar huella y convertirse en todo un referente. ¿Y quién mejor para explicarnos cómo fue crear el estilo de los personajes de 'Buffy, cazavampiros' que Cynthia Bergstrom, la diseñadora de vestuario de la serie?

And if the plot wasn't captivating enough, 'Buffy the Vampire Slayer' has an ace up its sleeve that marked a before and after in the productions of the late 90's and early 00's: the wardrobe. Besides being one of the series that created a trend when it came to developing female characters in later productions, the costumes of this series were so unique and characteristic that they managed to leave their mark and become a benchmark. And who better to explain to us what it was like to create the style of the characters of 'Buffy the Vampire Slayer' than Cynthia Bergstrom, the costume designer of the series?

El estilo de Buffy Summers ha tenido un gran impacto en los espectadores, convirtiéndose así en todo un referente: "Buffy era una heroína femenina, malvada, que mataba demonios y monstruos.  También tenía un lado extravagante, simpático y muy divertido que quería capturar.  Esto se puede ver en sus atuendos no relacionados con la lucha.  Para su ropa de combate, quería un aspecto elegante.  Una especie de esfuerzo minimalista que fuera sencillo y ligeramente sofisticado... sin tonterías.  Cuando lucha, va en serio.  Su ropa 'de combate', como la llamamos, tenía que ser también funcional, ya que probablemente tenía que esconder almohadillas o arneses", nos cuenta Cynthia.

Buffy Summers' style has had a great impact on viewers, making her a benchmark: "Buffy was a bad-ass, kick-ass feminine vampire, demon and monster slaying heroine.  She also had this quirky, cute super funny side to her that I wanted to capture.  You can see this in her non-slaying outfits.  For her fight clothes, I wanted a sleek look.  A sort of minimalist effort that was simple and slightly sophisticated…no nonsense.  When she fights, she means business.  Her “Fighty” clothes as we called them, had to be functional as well.  They might have to hide stunt pads or harnesses", Cynthia tells us.

A pesar de que los outfits de Buffy son de lo más característicos, vemos cómo, a medida que pasan las temporadas, su estilo también evoluciona, al mismo tiempo que lo hace su personalidad, siempre manteniendo en sus looks esa esencia personal que la hace tan única e irremplazable. Atentos a lo que nos cuenta Cynthia: "Cuando me incorporé a la segunda temporada, Buffy ya había sido creada por la diseñadora de vestuario Susana Puisto y tenía un aspecto que a los fans les encantaba, y aún les gusta.  Era perfecto para ella en ese momento. Cambié y evolucioné el aspecto de Buffy de una temporada a otra, como cuando compras ropa nueva para el colegio cada año. Era importante para mí que el look de Buffy evolucionara y creciera a medida que ella lo hacía.  La vestí con nuevos diseñadores emergentes muy a menudo.  Quería que se diferenciara del resto del reparto en términos de estilo". La diseñadora continúa: "En definitiva, quería que el look de Buffy fuera duradero y perdurable, y que mostrara las dos caras de quién era/es".

Although Buffy's outfits are very characteristic, we see how, as the seasons go by, her style also evolves, as does her personality, always maintaining in her looks that personal essence that makes her so unique and irreplaceable. Cynthia tells us: "When I came onboard for the 2nd season, Buffy had already been established by costume designer Susana Puisto and had a look that the fans loved, they still do.  It was perfect for her at the time. I shifted and evolved Buffy’s look from season to season, much like when you buy new school clothes for each new school year. It was important to me that Buffy’s look evolve and grow as she evolved and grew.  I dressed her in emerging new designers quite often.  I wanted her to be set apart from the rest of the cast in terms of style". The designer continues: "All in all, I wanted Buffy’s look to be lasting and enduring and to show both sides of who she was/is".

Si bien el estilo de Buffy es uno de los más impactantes, el de los vampiros Drusilla y Spike no se queda para nada atrás: "Para Drusilla, me fijé en las películas de vampiros de los años 60 y principios de los 70. Para Spike, quería que tuviera un aspecto un poco grunge, pero de Londres... no el ambiente grunge de Seattle", explica Cynthia Bergstrom.

While Buffy's style is one of the most striking, that of vampires Drusilla and Spike is by no means far behind: "For Drusilla, I looked to vintage vampire movies from the 60’s and early 70’s. For Spike, I wanted him to have a bit of a Grunge look to him but from London… not the Seattle Grunge vibe", explains Cynthia Bergstrom.

Crear un vestuario tan elaborado como el del elenco de 'Buffy cazavampiros' no es tarea fácil. Siempre hay retos, cambios de última hora y miles de contratiempos que pueden hacerte tambalear. Sin embargo, Cynthia y su equipo superaron todas las adversidades con éxito: "Supervisar el departamento de vestuario de cualquier programa puede estar lleno de desafíos.  Buffy no fue diferente.  Tuve un equipo increíble que lo hizo posible.  Nuestra supervisora de vestuario, Cindy Rosenthal-Dragin, hizo un trabajo increíble para que todo funcionara sin problemas y se asegurara de que los trajes se entregaran en el plató a tiempo.  Ella fue la clave del éxito de mi departamento", confiesa la diseñadora.

Creating a wardrobe as elaborate as that of the cast of 'Buffy the Vampire Slayer' is no easy task. There are always challenges, last-minute changes and thousands of setbacks that can send you reeling. However, Cynthia and her team overcame all adversity with flying colors: "Overseeing the costume department of any show might be fraught with challenges.  Buffy was no different.  I had an amazing team that made it all possible.  Our costume supervisor, Cindy Rosenthal-Dragin did an amazing job of keeping everything running smoothly and making sure the costumes were delivered to set on-time.  She was the key to the success of my department", confesses the designer.

Cynthia continúa: "Recuerdo que cuando Cindy y yo nos enfrentamos a vestir a personajes que se transformaban en personas pequeñas en un episodio de Halloween —o puede que fuera El Deseo—, en cualquier caso... se nos encomendó la tarea de hacer coincidir el traje de tamaño normal de los adultos con los disfraces de las personas pequeñas.  Al principio, nos sentimos un poco abrumados y pensamos que tendríamos que construir cada disfraz individual... ¡en 5 días!  Entonces nos dimos cuenta de que todo lo que teníamos que hacer era comprar en la estantería disfraces a juego para adultos y niños.  Este momento nos hizo la vida mucho más fácil. Todos los retos estaban resueltos.  Por naturaleza, soy una persona que resuelve problemas y encuentra soluciones.  Busco la solución y parto de ella.  Me encantan los buenos retos".

Cynthia continues: "I remember when Cindy and I were faced with dressing people who were transformed into little people in a Halloween episode or it might have been The Wish, any way…we were tasked with matching the regular adult sized costume to the little persons costumes.  At first, we were a bit overwhelmed and thought we would need to build each individual costume…within 5 days!  We then both realized all we had to do was buy off the shelf matching adult and children’s sized costumes.  This aha moment made our lives so much easier. Every challenge was met.  I am by nature a problem solver and solution finder.  I look for the solution and build from there.  I love a good challenge".

Si bien de por sí la trama de 'Buffy cazavampiros' ya contempla la aparición de vampiros, demonios y otros seres fuera de lo común, no podían faltar episodios de Halloween, la festividad por excelencia de estas inquietantes criaturas. ¿Cómo era crear el vestuario para este tipo de episodios? Atentos a la respuesta de Cynthia: "Siempre fue muy divertido diseñar, dibujar y construir los trajes a partir de la imaginación. Me encantaba y me sentía mimada por Buffy.  Como diseñadora e investigadora, me encantaba crear este tipo de trajes y dar vida a la palabra escrita en las páginas del guión".

While the plot of 'Buffy the Vampire Slayer' already includes the appearance of vampires, demons and other unusual creatures, Halloween episodes could not be missing, the quintessential holiday of these disturbing creatures. What was it like to create the costumes for this type of episode? Watch for Cynthia's answer: "It was always great fun to design, sketch and build the costumes from imagination. I loved it and was spoiled on Buffy.  As a designer and researcher, I loved creating these types of costumes and bringing the written word on the pages of the script to life".

Como hemos dicho, las nuevas generaciones tienen fascinación por los 90's y principios de los 00's. Y en términos estilísticos no iba a ser menos. Hoy en día podemos entrar en cualquier tienda de ropa y encontrarnos tops ceñidos sin mangas, vestidos y blusas satinadas, cazadoras largas de piel, bolsos baguette, chokers o unas increíbles botas altas a la altura de las rodillas, prendas que también lucieron Buffy y el resto del elenco femenino. ¿Vestiría ahora igual Cynthia al personaje encarnado por Sarah Michelle Gellar? "Creo que sería muy divertido vestir a Buffy hoy en día.  Me centraría en cómo está escrito el personaje, la visión de la serie, el actor que interpreta a Buffy y la representación general de la serie.  No seguiría lo que he hecho antes.  Crearía algo nuevo para el look de Buffy. La moda es cíclica.  Es genial que algo de lo que llevábamos en los 90-00 esté de vuelta.  Otras no tanto.  Volvería a buscar nuevos diseñadores emergentes y haría todo lo posible por diferenciarla del resto... para que cambie la cultura y marque las tendencias", confiesa la diseñadora.

As we have said, the new generations have a fascination for the 90's and early 00's. And in terms of style it was not going to be less. Today we can walk into any clothing store and find sleeveless tight-fitting tops, satin dresses and blouses, long leather jackets, baguette bags, chokers or incredible knee-high boots, garments that Buffy and the rest of the female cast also wore. Would Cynthia now dress the character played by Sarah Michelle Gellar the same way? "I think it would be so much fun to dress Buffy today.  I would focus on how the character is written, the vision for the show, the actor playing Buffy, and the overall portrayal of the show.  I would not follow what I did before.  I would create something new for Buffy’s look. Fashion is cyclical.  It’s great that some of what we wore in the 90’s-00’s is back.  Some not so much.  I would again look for emerging new designers and do my best to set her apart from the rest… so that she shifts the culture and sets the trends", the designer confesses.

Ya fuese a finales de los años noventa, a principios de los dos mil o justo hoy, el vestuario de 'Buffy cazavampiros' sigue siendo un referente para todos aquellos espectadores que tengan el placer de presenciar los outfits de la cazavampiros por excelencia. El estilo de Buffy que Cynthia y su equipo desarrollaron temporada tras temporada, se ha convertido en todo un icono atemporal, en un claro reflejo de las tendencias de la época adaptadas a su arrolladora personalidad, consiguiendo crear así uno de los vestuarios más míticos de la televisión. 

Whether it was in the late nineties, in the early two thousand or just today, the wardrobe of 'Buffy the Vampire Slayer' remains a benchmark for all those viewers who have the pleasure of witnessing the outfits of the vampire slayer par excellence. Buffy's style that Cynthia and her team developed season after season, has become a timeless icon, a clear reflection of the trends of the time adapted to her fascinating personality, thus creating one of the most legendary wardrobe on television.
