SECRETOS DE VESTUARIO: DETRÁS DE '2 BROKE GIRLS'

Si hay algo que nos gusta de las sitcoms es, no solo que nos permiten evadirnos de nuestra propia realidad durante unos minutos, sino que reflejan a las mil maravillas (y con un toque de humor) situaciones tan surrealistas como la vida misma. Y 'Dos Chicas sin Blanca' no iba a ser menos. 

If there's one thing we love about sitcoms, it's not only that they allow us to escape from our own reality for a few minutes, but also that they reflect situations as surreal as life itself. And '2 Broke Girls' was not going to be less.

La joven y rica Caroline (Beth Behrs) se cruza en la vida de Max (Kat Dennings), una camarera veinteañera procedente de un hogar humilde, cuando, de la noche a la mañana, se queda sin dinero y se ve obligada a trabajar en un restaurante para poder ganarse la vida. Sin embargo, y a pesar de sus diferencias, Caroline y Max se convierten en dos amigas inseparables unidas por el mismo sueño: conseguir 250.000 dólares para abrir su propio restaurante. 

Young and wealthy Caroline (Beth Behrs) crosses paths with Max (Kat Dennings), a twentysomething waitress from a humble home, when, overnight, she runs out of money and is forced to work in a restaurant to make a living. However, despite their differences, Caroline and Max become two inseparable friends united by the same dream: to get $250,000 to open their own restaurant.

Y, así, durante seis temporadas, Caroline y Max pasan por todo tipo de situaciones retantes acompañadas de sus ya icónicos delantales amarillos y rojos, (y a veces de disfraces de lo más surrealistas) para afrontar todos los contratiempos que la vida les pone por delante. Y para saber un poco más sobre cómo se creó el estilo de cada una de ellas y algunos de los looks más característicos de la serie, hemos tenido el placer de hablar con la inigualable Trayce Gigi Field, la diseñadora de 'Dos Chicas sin Blanca'. 

And so, for six seasons, Caroline and Max go through all kinds of challenging situations accompanied by their now iconic yellow and red uniform, (and sometimes the most surreal costumes) to face all the setbacks that life puts in front of them. And to find out a little more about how the style of each of them was created and some of the most characteristic looks of the series, we had the pleasure of speaking with the incomparable Trayce Gigi Field, the costume designer of '2 Broke Girls'.

Si bien, como hemos comentado anteriormente, las sitcoms se caracterizan por representar situaciones que pueden darse en la vida misma, eso no siempre se refleja en el vestuario. ¿Cuántas series hemos visto de chicas normales y corrientes que llevan un abrigo diferente cada día? Algo que no se amolda para nada a la realidad pero que está más normalizado en series de ficción de lo que debería. Sin embargo, eso es algo que no vemos en 'Dos Chicas sin Blanca'. A lo largo de las temporadas, tanto Max como Caroline repiten prendas, y las combinan de manera distinta para crear nuevos looks: "Para Max y Caroline, transmitir su situación económica era una parte vital de la narración visual.  Las dos chicas tenían armarios reales, como todos nosotros.  Rehacían piezas y las mezclaban y combinaban para crear nuevos conjuntos (como haríamos tú o yo).  Compraban en tiendas de segunda mano y tenían prendas básicas que veíamos una y otra vez. Ya sabes, como en la vida real", nos cuenta la diseñadora.

Although, as we have mentioned before, sitcoms are characterized by representing situations that can occur in life itself, this is not always reflected in the wardrobe. How many series have we seen of ordinary girls wearing a different coat every day? Something that does not conform to reality at all but that is more normalized in fiction series than it should be. However, that's something we don't see in '2 Broke Girls'. Throughout the seasons, both Max and Caroline repeat clothes, and combine them differently to create new looks: "For Max and Caroline conveying their economic status was a vital part of the visual storytelling.  Both girls had real closets like all of us.  They rewore pieces and mixed and matched pieces to create new outfits (just like you or I would do). Max and Caroline were authentic. They shopped at thrift stores and had staple pieces that we saw again and again. You know, like real life", the designer tells us.

El uniforme amarillo con detalles rojos de las protagonistas ya es todo un icono, pero, ¿cuál fue la inspiración para crearlo? Trayce nos lo explica: "Los uniformes debían ser icónicos, como Lavern y Shirley.  Quería que los uniformes parecieran reales, como si hubieran sido recreados en los años 70 con telas y siluetas de época.  Hice referencia a los comedores de época y a sus uniformes. Pensé en el ketchup y la mostaza. Crear estos uniformes fue una tarea inventiva muy divertida".

The yellow uniform with red details of the protagonists is already an icon, but what was the inspiration to create it? Trayce explains: "The uniforms were meant to be iconic like Lavern and Shirley.  I wanted the uniforms to feel real like they were recreated in the 70s using vintage fabric and silhouette. I referenced vintage diners and their uniforms. I thought of ketchup and mustard. Creating these uniforms was a such a fun inventive task".

Si bien Caroline y Max son súper buenas amigas, sus personalidades, gustos y estilo son muy diferentes, por lo que hay algunas marcas que funcionan mejor para cada una de ellas: "Sí, me encanta tener un enfoque genuino de la ropa de los personajes, como repetir las prendas y tener marcas favoritas para los personajes. La marca favorita de Max era sin duda los vaqueros JBrand.  Caroline era una clienta habitual de Louboutins y Stella McCartney (de su estado anterior en la vida)", explica la diseñadora. 

While Caroline and Max are super good friends, their personalities, tastes and style are very different, so there are some brands that work best for each of them: "Yes, I love to have a genuine approach to characters' clothes.  Repeating garments and having favorite brands for characters. Max's favorite brand was definitely JBrand jeans.  Caroline was a repeat customer of Louboutins and Stella McCartney (from her previous status in life)", the designer explains.

Y aunque el uniforme y los looks del día a día son los que más vemos a lo largo de la serie, hay algunos episodios que nos sorprenden con looks de lo más ingeniosos (diseñados por la misma Trayce). ¿Cuáles son los looks favoritos de la diseñadora? Ella misma nos lo cuenta: "Tengo dos momentos de diseño favoritos de la serie.  El personaje de The Death Bitch (Max) y el Carnero (Caroline).  Uno de mis personajes favoritos para diseñar fue Sophie (Jennifer Coolidge), a la que me refería con cariño como mi muñeca Barbie polaca. Toda su ropa era una explosión de colores y texturas, ¡era pura diversión!"

And although the uniform and everyday looks are the ones we see most throughout the series, there are some episodes that surprise us with the most ingenious looks (designed by Trayce herself). What are the designer's favorite looks? She tells us herself: "I have two favorite design moments from the show. The Death Bitch character (Max) and the Ram (Caroline).  One of my favorite Characters to Desgin for was Sophie (Jennifer Coolidge) I fondly referred to her as my Polish Barbie Doll. All of her clothes were burst of colors and textures, she was pure fun!"

'Dos Chicas sin Blanca' cuenta con más de 130 episodios, cada uno de ellos ilustrado por una gran cantidad de conjuntos que lograron enamorar a los espectadores, pero, ¿cómo fue la experiencia de trabajar en la serie? "Trabajar en 'Dos Chicas sin Blanca' fue una experiencia increíble.  Me lo pasé muy bien diseñando muchas prendas por encargo. Pude ayudar a contar la historia a través de la ropa. Trabajar con Michael Patrick King (Sexo en Nueva York) es una experiencia en sí misma.  Tiene un gusto impecable y sabe lo que quiere. Te ofrece un entorno maravilloso para que seas lo más creativo posible", confiesa Trayce Gigi Field.

'2 Broke Girls' has more than 130 episodes, each of them illustrated by a large number of outfits that made viewers fall in love, but how does she remember the experience of working on the series? "Working on 2 Broke Girls was an amazing experience.  I had such a great time designing so many made to order pieces. I was able to help tell the story through clothes. Working with Michael Patrick King (Sex and the City) is an experience in itself.  He has impeccable taste and knows what he wants. He gives you a wonderful setting for being your most creative self", Trayce Gigi Field confesses.

'Dos Chicas sin Blanca' es una producción que tiene un montón de factores que han corroborado su éxito y que han hecho que sea una de las series más vistas a nivel internacional. Sin embargo, el diseño de vestuario ocupa un lugar especial. Ya no hablamos solamente de qué hubiese de Caroline y Max sin esos icónicos uniformes, sino de la aportación de realidad que Trayce Gigi Field le ha dado a la serie. Estamos hartos de ver películas y series en las que no se repiten prendas y en las que chicas sin un gran poder adquisitivo lucen ropa de marca. Obviamente, la ficción no pretende ser realista, pero sí que se agradece ese gesto cercano hacia un público que ha podido sentirse más identificado y próximo a Caroline y Max gracias a su vestuario, sin lugar a dudas un factor relevante y especial que, gracias al trabajo de Trayce y su equipo, ha marcado un antes y un después en el concepto estilístico de las sitcoms. 

'2 Broke Girls' is a production that has a lot of factors that have corroborated its success and have made it one of the most watched series internationally. However, the costume design occupies a special place. We're not just talking about what would Caroline and Max be without those iconic uniforms (and amazing costumes!), but also about the realism that Trayce Gigi Field has brought to the series. We are sick and tired of watching movies and series in which clothes are not repeated and in which girls without great purchasing power wear brand name clothes. Obviously, fiction does not pretend to be realistic, but we are grateful for this close gesture towards an audience that has been able to feel more identified and closer to Caroline and Max thanks to their wardrobe, undoubtedly a relevant and special factor that, thanks to the work of Trayce and her team, has marked a before and after in the stylistic concept of sitcoms.
