And so, with a pinch of reality among so much fiction, 'Modern Family' has managed to keep its audience loyal for 11 seasons. Si pensamos en los episodios protagonizados por los Pritchett/Dunphy, es casi obligatorio recordar esos despampanantes vestidos de Gloria (Sofia Vergara) o esas icónicas fiestas de Halloween organizadas por Claire (Julie Bowen) o, cómo no, ese disfraz de payaso de Cam (Eric Stonestreet). Todos los trajes que hemos visto a lo largo de la serie han reflejado no solamente la personalidad y evolución de los personajes, sino también han dado carácter y singularidad a episodios temáticos, que no son pocos. Por ese motivo, hemos decidido hablar con Pam Chilton, la diseñadora de vestuario de 'Modern Family', para que nos cuente un poco más sobre todas estas decisiones estilísticas.
If we think of the episodes starring the Pritchetts/Dunphy, it is almost obligatory to remember those stunning dresses of Gloria (Sofia Vergara) or those iconic Halloween parties organized by Claire (Julie Bowen) or, of course, that clown costume of Cam (Eric Stonestreet). All the costumes we have seen throughout the series have reflected not only the personality and evolution of the characters, but have also given character and uniqueness to themed episodes, which are not few. For that reason, we decided to talk to Pam Chilton, the costume designer of 'Modern Family', to tell us a little more about all these stylistic decisions.

Cada personaje de 'Modern Family' tiene un estilo muy bien definido que va evolucionando junto con sus respectivas personalidades y carácteres. Sin embargo, si hay un vestuario que recordaremos pasen los años que pasen, ese será el de Gloria Pritchett (Sofía Vergara): "Lo divertido de vestir a Gloria era que se ponía alta costura —Versace o Roberto Cavalli— y también llevaba marcas de Macy. Se trataba de la forma, del ajuste y de lo divertido que era para el personaje vestirse sin dejar de sentir que se trataba de un personaje real", nos cuenta Pam Chilton.
Each character in 'Modern Family' has a very well defined style that evolves along with their respective personalities and character. However, if there is a wardrobe that we will remember no matter how many years go by, it will be Gloria Pritchett's (Sofía Vergara):"What was so fun about dressing Gloria was that she would wear couture— Versace or Roberto Cavalli and also wear Macy brands. It was about the shape, fit and how funny it was for the character to wear while still feeling grounded in a real character", Pam Chilton tells us.

Uno de los personajes que ha reflejado una de las evoluciones estilísticas más notorias ha sido Haley Dunphy (Sarah Hyland). Si bien en su adolescencia ya la veíamos enfundada en outfits de lo más fashionistas, su estilo empieza a definirse y a sentar sus bases cuando comienza a trabajar en lo que realmente la apasiona: "En las últimas temporadas Haley trabaja en un ambiente tipo Goop (la mega máquina de la marca Gweneth Paltrow). Creo que estaba descubriendo quién es realmente. Ella puede ser ella misma allí y su sentido del estilo refleja eso", nos explica la diseñadora.
One of the characters that has reflected one of the most notorious stylistic evolutions has been Haley Dunphy (Sarah Hyland). Although in her adolescence we already saw her wearing the most fashionable outfits, her style began to be defined and to lay its foundations when she started working in what she really loves: "In the last few seasons Haley works in a Goop (Gweneth Paltrow’s brand mega machine) type environment. I think she was discovering who she really is. She can hold her own there and her sense of style reflects that", the designer explains.

A pesar de que todos los personajes tienen un estilo muy definido y concreto, hay episodios en los que los vemos salirse un poco de sus casillas: Halloween, graduaciones, fiestas de princesas... ¿cuál es el episodio temático favorito de Pam? Atentos a su respuesta: "¡¡Hay muchos!! A lo largo de las temporadas creamos diferentes 'mundos' con actores de fondo —una obra de teatro de la escuela, un mercado de agricultores, un desfile del 4 de julio— tantas oportunidades para crear diferentes ambientes... Uno de mis episodios favoritos fue cuando Phil y Mitch fueron a un evento de la Comic Con y pudimos crear tantos personajes de ciencia ficción increíbles. ¡Es un episodio divertido!"
Although all the characters have a very defined and specific style, there are episodes in which we see them going a bit out of their way: Halloween, graduations, princess parties... what is Pam's favorite themed episode? Stay tuned for her answer:"There are many!!! So many times we created different worlds with background actors— it could be a school play, a farmers market, a 4th of july parade— so many opportunities to create different worlds. One of my favorites was when Phil and Mitch went to a Comic Con event and we got to come up with so many amazing sci fi characters— it is a funny episode!"

A lo largo de las 11 temporadas de 'Modern Family' hemos visto a los personajes pasar por todo tipo de situaciones, unas más locas que otras: "Era divertido recibir el siguiente guión y empezar a imaginarlo en mi cabeza. Entonces empieza la búsqueda del tesoro y acabas riéndote en el probador mientras el traje se va confeccionando. Realmente fue una experiencia increíble", confiesa Pam.
Throughout the 11 seasons of 'Modern Family' we've seen the characters go through all kinds of situations, some crazier than others: "It is hard to pick a favorite. They all had such defined characteristics. It was fun to get the next script and start imaging it in my head. Then the treasure hunt begins and you end up laughing in the fitting room as the costume comes together. It really was an amazing experience", Pam confesses.

Saber captar la esencia de un personaje y reflejarla en su vestuario no es un trabajo fácil y menos cuando tienes que vestir a un elenco tan numeroso como el de 'Modern Family'. Temporada tras temporada hemos visto cómo sus trajes formaban parte de quiénes eran, los definían y, a su vez, ayudaban a los espectadores a entender mejor la personalidad de cada uno de ellos. Y es por ese motivo que nos resulta completamente imposible desasociar a Gloria de sus vestidos ajustados, a Cam de sus camisas coloridas, a Haley de sus sombreros fashionistas o a Many de sus mini-trajes. Que no seamos capaces de pensar en los personajes sin ver en ellos las prendas icónicas que tanto los caracterizan dice mucho del gran trabajo que hay detrás de una serie que ha conquistado a más de 1o millones espectadores de todo el mundo.
Knowing how to capture the essence of a character and reflect it in their wardrobe is not an easy job and even less so when you have to dress a cast as large as that of 'Modern Family'. Season after season we have seen how their costumes were part of who they were, defined them and, in turn, helped viewers to better understand the personality of each character. And it is for that reason that we find it completely impossible to disassociate Gloria from her tight dresses, Cam from his colorful shirts, Haley from her fashionista hats or Many from her mini-suits. TThat we are unable to think of the characters without seeing in them the iconic garments that characterize them so much says a lot about the great work behind a series that has conquered more than 1o million viewers around the world.
