SECRETOS DE VESTUARIO: DETRÁS DE 'LIKE A PRAYER' BY MADONNA

3 de marzo de 1989. Ese día, MTV estrenó en exclusiva un vídeo musical que causó un gran revuelo internacional, que puso a toda la comunidad religiosa patas arriba y que hizo tambalear hasta los cimientos del mismísimo Vaticano. Sí, 'Like a Prayer' vio la luz, desató el escándalo y marcó un antes y un después no solo en la trayectoria profesional de Madonna, sino en la historia de la música pop. 

March 3, 1989. On that day, MTV exclusively premiered a music video that caused an international uproar, turned the entire religious community upside down and shook even the foundations of the Vatican itself. Yes, 'Like a Prayer' was released, unleashed the scandal and marked a before and after not only in Madonna's professional career, but also in the history of pop music.

Si bien no hay un solo single de Madonna que no sea mítico, 'Like a Prayer' consiguió ir más allá de la escena musical y puso sobre la palestra una encrucijada sobre los valores, la ética y la moral, algo que no fue bien recibido por la iglesia, pero que sí que fue aclamado por gran parte de un sociedad que aplaudía a la cantante por ser disruptiva y mostrar el racismo policial en las pantallas de todo el mundo. 

While there is not a single Madonna single that is not mythical, 'Like a Prayer' managed to go beyond the music scene and brought to the forefront a crossroads about values, ethics and morals, something that was not well received by the church, but was acclaimed by a large part of a society that applauded the singer for being disruptive and showing police racism on screens around the world. 

Y aunque la crítica persiguió a este vídeo y a Madonna durante su estreno y semanas posteriores a él, 'Like a Prayer' consiguió ser número uno en más de 26 países, fue disco de oro en países como España, Alemania, Italia, Nueva Zelanda, Países Bajos y Suiza y el vídeo musical se llevó consigo 3 premios MTV, ASCAP Pop Awards y MVPA Awards. 

And although critics hounded this video and Madonna during its release and weeks after it, 'Like a Prayer' managed to be number one in over 26 countries, went gold in countries such as Spain, Germany, Italy, New Zealand, the Netherlands and Switzerland and the music video took home 3 MTV Awards, ASCAP Pop Awards and MVPA Awards.

A pesar de la historia que muestra el videoclip de 'Like a Prayer', algo que causó mucho revuelo fue la vestimenta de la cantante. Todavía a día de hoy, hay muchas iglesias y catedrales que prohiben la entrada por ir en pantalón corto, falda o camisa sin tirantes, por lo que, ver a una joven Madonna dentro de una iglesia con un vestido lencero por el que asomaba su sujetador a finales de los 80s, fue todo un escándalo y, en vista de muchos, una provocación y una puesta en duda de sus valores morales. 

Despite the story that shows the video clip of 'Like a Prayer', something that caused a stir was the dress of the singer. Even today, there are many churches and cathedrals that prohibit entry for wearing shorts, skirts or strapless shirts, so seeing a young Madonna inside a church in a lingerie dress with her bra showing through in the late 80s, was a scandal and, in the eyes of many, a provocation and a questioning of her moral values.

Para indagar un poco más sobre este tema y poder saber cuál fue la inspiración y la intencionalidad del vestuario en 'Like a Prayer', hablamos con Marlene Stewart, la que fue la estilista personal de Madonna. 

Marlene Stewart ha sido la estilista de Madonna desde prácticamente sus inicios, pero también ha sido la diseñadora de vestuario de producciones como 'Coyote Ugly, 'The Holiday', 'Free Guy', 'The Fate and the Furious' o 'Terminator 2'.  

To find out more about this topic and to know what was the inspiration and intentionality of the wardrobe in 'Like a Prayer', we talked to Marlene Stewart, Madonna's former personal stylist. 

Marlene Stewart has been Madonna's stylist since practically her beginnings, but she has also been the costume designer for productions like 'Coyote Ugly', 'The Holiday', 'Free Guy', 'The Fate and the Furious' or 'Terminator 2'.

"La inspiración para 'Like a Prayer' fue que el 'personaje' de Madonna continuara con su estilo clásico de Hollywood y lo mezclara con lo que conocemos como 'ropa religiosa' y contara una historia", nos cuenta Marlene. 

La estilista continúa: "Comienza con lo que podría ser un abrigo negro, que recuerda a algo de una orden religiosa, pero luego aparece con un slip dress ajustado, la ropa interior que se usa como ropa de día". 

"The inspiration for Like a prayer was that her 'character' continue with  her classic old Hollywood styling and mix it with what we know as religious clothing’ and tell a story", Marlene tells us. 

The stylists continues: "She starts out in what could be a black coat - reminiscent of something in a religious order,  but then appears in a fitted slip dress - the lingerie worn as day wear".

El vestido lencero causó un gran impacto en la sociedad de la época, ya no por el outfit en sí, sino por el contexto en el que estaba la cantante: "La idea era explorar nuestras ideas sobre los tabúes, la espiritualidad y la sexualidad. Aunque su vestido ajustado de color marrón chocolate con encaje no revela nada, resulta provocativo por la idea de llevar un slip en un entorno religioso", nos explica la estilista. 

This slip dress caused a great impact on the society of the time, not because of the outfit itself, but because of the context in which the singer was: "The idea is to explore our ideas of taboos, spirituality and sexuality. Although nothing is really revealed by her fitted chocolate brown slip dress with lace trim it is provocative because of the idea of wearing a slip in a religious setting", the stylist explains.

"Este vestido es un clásico... podría haber sido visto en una vieja película de Hollywood por cualquier número de estrellas de cine en los 50's & 60's y sin embargo trasladado a una capilla que se convierte en una cárcel... vemos nuestras ideas como algo que puede 'liberarnos' o encarcelarnos," explica Marlene.  

"This slip dress is a classic look, could have been seen in an old Hollywood movie by any number of movie stars in the 50’s & 60’s and yet transferred to a chapel which turns into a jail... we see our ideas as something that can either 'free' us or imprison us," Marlene tells us.

Los looks de Madonna siempre se han caracterizado por ser rompedores, y por mezclar el estilo grunge con ese toque chic y sexy que solo ella es capaz de conseguir y que se consolidó a raíz de la era de 'Like a Prayer': "El tirante del vestido se deslizaba hacia abajo para mostrar el tirante del sujetador... esa era su firma: la lencería como ropa exterior y en aquel momento era bastante novedosa. A nivel de diseño siempre he utilizado la lencería como elemento clave en sus trajes".

Madonna's looks have always been characterized for being groundbreaking, and for mixing grunge style with that chic and sexy touch that only she is able to achieve and that was consolidated after the era of 'Like a Prayer': "the strap of the dress slips down to show her bra strap... her signature -lingerie as outerwear- which at the time was quite new. On a pure design level I always used lingerie as a key element in her costumes".

Además de haber sido la artífice de looks tan impresionantes como el slip dress, Marlene Stewart también ha diseñado algunos atuendos exclusivamente para la reina del pop. Pero, ¿cuál es su favorito? "En cuanto a un traje favorito, el vestido de novia que diseñé para ella. ¡Fue muy emocionante crearlo y fue un momento memorable!".

In addition to having been the artist of such impressive looks as the slip dress, Marlene Stewart has also designed some outfits exclusively for the queen of pop. But which one is her favorite? "As for a favorite outfit, I supposed her wedding dress that I designed... As it was so exciting to created  and was such a memorable moment to experience!"

Si bien no es la primera vez que analizamos el impacto que puede llegar a tener el vestuario en la trascendencia videoclip, 'Like a Prayer' es quizá el ejemplo más claro. Un slip dress es todo lo que necesitó Madonna para contar esta historia. Solamente apoyándose en un contexto y en una escenografía, Marlene Stewart consiguió que una prenda tan sencilla como es el vestido lencero tuviese, no solo el protagonismo de todo el vídeo, sino una gran connotación reflexiva que fuese capaz de indagar en nuestras creencias, sacar a relucir tabúes y traspasar fronteras. Una vez más, Stewart nos muestra que menos es más y que si tienes una prenda lo bastante potente como para transmitir todo lo que necesitas contar, es más que suficiente. 

While this is not the first time we analyze the impact that wardrobe can have on the transcendence of a music video, 'Like a Prayer' is perhaps the clearest example. A slip dress is all Madonna needed to tell this story. Only by relying on a context and a scenography, Marlene Stewart managed to make such a simple garment as the lingerie dress have, not only the protagonism of the whole video, but a great reflective connotation that was able to probe our beliefs, bring up taboos and cross borders. Once again, Stewart shows us that less is more and that if you have a garment powerful enough to convey everything you need to tell, it is more than enough.
