SECRETOS DE VESTUARIO: DETRÁS DE 'PAM & TOMMY'

Cuando se anunció que se iba a estrenar una serie basada en los años más tumultuosos de Pamela Anderson y Tommy Lee, el revuelo fue unánime, no solo por la trama de la producción sino por ver cómo los actores elegidos tendrían que meterse en la piel de los personajes célebres. 

When it was announced that a series based on Pamela Anderson and Tommy Lee's most tumultuous years would be released, the uproar was unanimous, not only because of the production's plot but also to see how the chosen actors would have to get into the skin of the celebrity characters.

A primeras, nadie se imaginaba a Lily James como la protagonista de Baywatch o a Sebastian Stan como el batería de Mötley Crüe; no por el inevitable talento de ambos (papeles que, por cierto, han bordado) sino por el enorme trabajo de caracterización que tenía que llevarse a cabo. 

At first, no one imagined Lily James as the Baywatch star or Sebastian Stan as the drummer of Mötley Crüe; not because of the inevitable talent of both (roles that, by the way, they nailed) but because of the enormous work of characterization that had to be carried out.

Y sin embargo, pese a las dudas que podían tener los espectadores en sus mentes, el resultado disipó cualquier temor e inquietud que pudieran tener al respecto. Desde la primera aparición de los protagonistas, en ningún momento vemos a Lily o a Sebastian, solamente vemos a una risueña Pamela Anderson y a un enérgico Tommy Lee, ambos enamorados e ingenuos sobre lo que les depararían los próximos meses de su vida. 

Y este increíble y verosímil resultado final no hubiese sido posible sin el gran trabajo de todo un equipo de vestuario y maquillaje, liderado por los increíbles Kameron Lennox y David Williams. 

And yet, despite any doubts viewers may have had in their minds, the result dispelled any fears and concerns they may have had about it. From the first appearance of the main characters, at no point do we see Lily or Sebastian, we only see a cheerful Pamela Anderson and an energetic Tommy Lee, both in love and naive about what the next few months of their lives would bring. 

And this incredible and plausible final result would not have been possible without the great work of an entire wardrobe and makeup team, led by the incredible Kameron Lennox and David Williams.

Para que los espectadores pudiéramos ver a una Lily James convertida en Pamela Anderson y a un Sebastian Stan convertido en Tommy Lee, tanto Kameron Lennox como David Williams tuvieron que llevar a cabo un extenso proceso de documentación previo, cada uno enfocado a su área de actuación: "La investigación es realmente la parte más divertida de mi trabajo. Lo primero que hago para recrear un personaje real es buscar cualquier tipo de vídeo o película para observar sus gestos y cómo se comportan. También me meto de lleno en Internet para buscar fotos y recrear una línea de tiempo para ellos. Luego empiezo a crear tableros de ambiente/tono/estilo. He creado tableros para Pam desde finales de los 80 hasta finales de los 90. Hice un tablero para cada año", nos cuenta la diseñadora de vestuario.

In order for viewers to see a Lily James turned Pamela Anderson and a Sebastian Stan turned Tommy Lee, both Kameron Lennox and David Williams had to undertake an extensive documentation process beforehand, each focused on their area of acting: "Research really is the most fun part of my job. The very first thing I do for recreating a real character is looking for any type of video or film to watch their mannerisms and how they hold themselves. I also do a deep dive into the internet to source photos and recreate a timeline for them. Then I start building mood/tone/style boards. I created boards for Pam starting in the late ‘80s and ending in the late ‘90s. One board was made for each year", the costume designer tells us.

Kameron Lennox sigue: "Dado que nuestra historia tiene lugar entre 1995 y 1997 aproximadamente, estos tableros me ayudan a tener completamente clara la progresión de dónde estaban, dónde están en el momento en que tiene lugar nuestra historia, y luego hacia dónde van en el futuro inmediato. Kameron Lennox follows: "Since our story takes place between 1995-1997ish, these boards help keep me completely clear of the progression of where they were, where they are at in the moment that our story takes place, and then to where they are going in the immediate future. This way I can incorporate all of these ideas into our designs."

Por su parte David Williams retrata este proceso con un inicio muy claro: "Todo comienza con las palabras. El guión dicta la época y el carácter. Empecé el proceso de crear el look de Pam de mediados de los 90 estudiando fotos de Lily y Pam una al lado de la otra. Sabía que podíamos conseguirlo; estábamos convirtiendo a una hermosa mujer en otra hermosa mujer.  Las diferencias faciales más notables entre Lily y Pam son el espacio de la frente y las cejas. Aplicar una protésis en la frente era una solución doble para esas diferencias. A continuación, quise que la sonrisa de Lily replicara la sonrisa del millón de dólares de Pam. Se esculpió un aparato dental para conseguir ese aspecto. Más allá de la diferencia estructural creada por la frente, un poco de pintura te convertirá en lo que no eres. David Williams portrays this process with a very clear beginning: "It all begins with the words. The script dictates period and character. I began the process of creating Pam’s mid 90s look studying photos of Lily and Pam side by side. I knew we could get there; we were turning one beautiful women into another beautiful women. The most notable facial differences between Lily and Pam are the forehead space and the brows. Applying a forehead piece was a two fold solution for those differences. I then wanted Lily’s smile to replicate Pam’s million dollar smile. A dental appliance was sculpted to achieve the look. Beyond the structural difference created by the forehead, a little paint will make you what you ain’t. We used classic highlight and shadow techniques to contour Lily’s face into Pam using the Makeup Forever HD Professional foundation palette".

Puesto que esta parte de documentación y preparación es fundamental para llevar a cabo tanto el trabajo de vestuario de Lennox como el de maquillaje de Williams, a partir de esta base cada uno tiene que empezar a planificar y ver cómo llevar a cabo la transformación de los actores en los célebres protagonistas, algo que obviamente incluye el hecho de encontrar o recrear las prendas que ellos mismos lucieron durante los 90s: "Hicimos a medida las prendas más icónicas que Lily lleva en nuestra serie, por ejemplo, los trajes de cuero en Barb Wire, el traje de baño rojo en Baywatch y el bikini blanco para su boda en la playa. También hicimos a medida el traje de la escena de la declaración para reproducir uno de los trajes que llevaba en la vida real. Era importante recrear estos looks para que fueran idénticos. Para otras escenas, buscamos piezas de época de diseñadores conocidos por ella, como Versace, Dolce & Gabbana, Azzedine Alaïa y Vivienne Westwood. Además, encontramos ropa vintage de la época para crear el look o la silueta deseados", nos cuenta Kameron Lennox. 

Since this part of documentation and preparation is fundamental to carry out both Lennox's costume work and Williams' makeup work, from this base each one has to start planning and seeing how to carry out the transformation of the actors into the famous protagonists, something that obviously includes finding or recreating the clothes that they themselves wore during the 90s: "We custom-made the most iconic pieces Lily wears in our show, for example, the leather outfits in Barb Wire, the red bathing suit in Baywatch, and the white bikini for her wedding on the beach. We also custom-made the suit for her deposition scene to replicate one of the outfits she wore in real life. It felt important to recreate these looks to be identical. For other scenes, we sourced vintage pieces from designers she was known to wear including Versace, Dolce & Gabbana, Azzedine Alaïa, and Vivienne Westwood. Additionally, we found vintage clothing from the era to create the desired look or silhouette," Kameron Lennox explains.

Sin duda alguna, cuando estás viendo la serie y ves la actuación de Lily James te cuesta mucho creer que la persona que está en pantalla en realidad no es Pamela Anderson, algo que demuestra la precisión de la caracterización de la actriz de 'Cinderella': "Las cejas de Pam eran su rasgo facial más identificable. Utilizar una prótesis de frente fue una solución doble para nosotros. Nos permitió apartar la peluca de la línea de nacimiento del cabello de Lily y cubrir sus también notables cejas. A continuación, colocamos unas cejas de encaje cosidas, realizadas por Sasha Camacho Van Dyke, para replicar las cejas de Pam", nos cuenta David Williams. 

Without a doubt, when you're watching the series and you see Lily James' performance you have a hard time believing that the person on screen is actually not Pamela Anderson, something that demonstrates the accuracy of the 'Cinderella' actress' characterization: "Pam's brows were her most identifiable facial feature. Using a prosthetic forehead was a two-fold solution for us. It gave the ability to set her wig back from Lily's hairline and cover Lily's also notable brows. We then laid had sewn lace eyebrows, made by Sasha Camacho Van Dyke, to replicate Pam's brows", David Williams tells us.

Sin embargo, aunque podemos encontrar bastantes imágenes y vídeos de Pamela y Tom de aquella época, no todo en sus vidas estaba documentado. ¿Cómo fue tener que crear esos looks de los que no había ninguna referencia? "Esta es una gran pregunta y en la que tuvimos que pensar mucho durante nuestra preparación. Como no teníamos acceso a ninguna foto personal, creamos los looks basándonos en las ideas de cómo vestían ambos en ese momento y en lo que era popular en esa época", nos cuenta Lennox. 

However, although we can find quite a few images and videos of Pamela and Tom from that time, not everything in their lives was documented. What was it like to have to create those looks for which there was no reference? "This is a great question and one that we had to really think about during our prep. Because we did not have access to any personal photos, we created looks based on ideas of how they were both dressing at the time and what was popular in that era," Lennox confesses.

La viva encarnación de Pamela Anderson luce looks increíbles durante toda la serie, por lo que no hemos podido evitar preguntarle a Kameron cuáles son sus favoritos. The living embodiment of Pamela Anderson wears amazing looks throughout the series, so we couldn't help but ask Kameron what her favorites are. Heads up: "Yes, I am very fond of many of the outfits! I really had fun with her and feel like a lot of these outfits can be worn today! My very favorites were the leather pant and angora sweater in episode 5, the vintage lingerie in episode 6, the gold Vivienne Westwood dress in episode 2, and her chrome latex gown she wears to the Barb Wire premiere in episode 7".

Además del increíble vestuario que podemos ver en los protagonistas, hubo un aspecto que llamó enormemente la atención de los espectadores: los tatuajes de Tommy Lee. ¿Cómo se plasmaron estos tattoos en la piel de Sebastian Stan? David Williams nos lo explica: "El equipo de Sebastian tuvo la tarea de aplicar durante 3 horas diarias los extensos tatuajes y piercings de Tommy. Bill Myer y Dave Snyder aplicaron minuciosamente los tatuajes de mangas completas, cuerpo, espalda y piernas a Sebastian Stan. Por motivos legales, los tatuajes tuvieron que ser modificados. Autonomous FX reflejó artísticamente los diseños originales de Tommy. Se aplicaron cubiertas de pezones para los anillos de los pezones de Tommy. El propio vello facial de Sebastian fue moldeado en forma de parche para replicar mejor el de Tommy y se puso un piercing de nariz. Sebastian también llevaba lentes de contacto. Para conseguir el look de estrella de rock frente al de estrella de cine, Sebastian tuvo que ser muy creativo, porque es súper atractivo". 

In addition to the incredible costumes we can see on the main characters, there was one aspect that caught the viewers' attention enormously: Tommy Lee's tattoos. How were these tattoos captured on Sebastian Stan's skin? David Williams explains: "Sebastian’s team had the 3 hour daily task of applying Tommy’s extensive tattoos and piercings. Bill Myer and Dave Snyder painstakingly applied full sleeves, body, back, and leg tattoos to Sebastian Stan. For legal purposes, tattoos had to be altered. Autonomous FX artfully mirrored Tommy’s original designs. Nipple covers were applied for Tommy’s nipple rings. Sebastian’s own facial hair was shaped into a soul patch to best replicate Tommy’s and he wore a nose ring. Sebastian also wore contact lenses. There was a bit of creative artistry involved in achieving the rock star vs. movie star look for Sebastian, because he’s just so darn good looking!"

Es imposible no ver la serie y preguntarse cómo conseguir el look de Pamela Anderson, algo que hemos tenido la suerte de comentar con los dos artistas. En cuanto al vestuario, Kameron Lennox nos comenta lo siguiente: "Yo describiría el estilo de Pamela Anderson como una bombshell de los 50 pero en los 90, como Brigitte Bardot o Marilyn Monroe, con un matiz de rock-n-roll". Y si estás preguntándote cuáles son los básicos para maquillarte como la actriz de Baywatch también tenemos una respuesta para ti: "Se utilizó el lápiz de cejas Anastasia para dibujar ligeramente las cejas para su colocación antes de pegar las delicadas piezas de encaje cosidas a mano para las cejas. Los labios eran en su mayoría de un tono beige/rosa natural:  Charlotte Tilbury Pillow Talk, las nuevas barras de labios de Hermes exquisitamente empaquetadas (Rosey, Epice, Kalahari, Ebloui), Tom Ford Forbidden Pink y las 10 originales de Bobbi Brown sirvieron como barras de labios de base. La barra de labios Coco Flash Boy de Chanel con Chanel Nude (mi perfilador de labios favorito de todos los tiempos) se utilizó para el icónico look de Baywatch. Además de Chanel Nude, los perfiladores de labios MAC Spice y Chanel Vamp eran lápices de mediados de los 90, a menudo ligeramente exagerados y visibles para representar el estilo de labios de la época".

It's impossible not to watch the series and wonder how to get the Pamela Anderson look, something we've been lucky enough to discuss with both artists. As for the wardrobe, Kameron Lennox has this to say: "I would describe Pamela Anderson’s style as a ‘90s version of a ‘50s bombshell, like Brigitte Bardot or Marilyn Monroe, with a rock-n-roll undertone." And if you're wondering what are the basics to make up like the Baywatch actress we also have an answer for you: "Anastasia Brow pencil was used to lightly draw the brow for placement before gluing down the delicate hand sewn lace brow pieces.The lips were most often a natural beige/rose tone:  Charlotte Tilbury Pillow Talk, the exquisitely packaged new Hermes lipsticks (Rosey, Epice, Kalahari, Ebloui), Tom Ford Forbidden Pink, and the original 10 Bobbi Brown served as our base lipsticks. Chanel Coco Flash Boy lipstick with Chanel Nude (my all-time favorite lip liner) was used for the iconic Baywatch look. In addition to Chanel Nude, the MAC Spice and Chanel Vamp lip liners were mid 90s pencils often slightly overdrawn and visible to represent the lip style of the period".

Aunque sobra decirlo, cuando se trata de hacer verosímiles unos personajes tan célebres, nada es fácil, por lo que proyectos de la magnitud de Pam & Tommy conlleva muchos retos: "El mayor reto que tuvimos fue trabajar con la prótesis de Lily. Hubo momentos en los que Lily no llevaba la placa en el pecho y creamos la misma forma y aspecto bajo su ropa con el uso de un sujetador a medida. Pero hubo que discutir mucho con los equipos de prótesis y maquillaje y hacer pruebas con Lily para saber cuándo y dónde usaríamos la prótesis o el sujetador", nos cuenta Lennox por la parte de vestuario. Y en cuanto a David nos confiesa que "la autenticidad y la credibilidad son siempre el aspecto más difícil de recrear, personas que viven en el zeitgeist de la mente de la gente. Disfruté cada momento de este proyecto desde su inicio, incluso los momentos difíciles. Fue un reto, divertido y gratificante. Reunir a un equipo de maquilladores de primera categoría a los que respeto y admiro, trabajar con ellos todos los días y que los resultados sean tan sorprendentes es, sencillamente, el mejor éxito que podía esperar". 

Needless to say, when it comes to making such famous characters believable, nothing is easy, so projects of the magnitude of Pam & Tommy entail many challenges: "The biggest challenge we had was working around Lily's prosthetic. There were times when Lily was not in the chest plate and we created the same shape and look underneath her clothes with the use of a custom bra. But it took a lot of discussion with the prosthetics and makeup teams and fittings with Lily to figure out when and where we would use the prosthetic or the bra", Lennox tells us about the wardrobe. And as for David, he confesses to us that "authenticity and believability are always the most challenging aspect to recreating people who live in the zeitgeist of people's mind. I enjoyed every moment of this project from its inception, even the difficult moments. This was challenging, fun and rewarding. Putting together a team of top notch makeup artists who I respect and and admire, getting to work with them everyday and having the results be so astonishing is simply the best success I could hope to achieve".

Kameron Lennox y David Williams (junto con el increíble trabajo de peluquería de Barry Lee Moe) han sido capaces de traernos de vuelta a unos jóvenes Pam y Tommy y toda una estética noventera digna de admirar. Sin duda alguna, detrás de vestuario y maquillaje siempre hay un enorme trabajo, pero cuando hablamos de producciones como esta la presión es mayor, no solo por el reto que supone en sí (que es obvio) sino por lo que se espera de ella. Y el resultado no podría ser más perfecto: una Lily James y un Sebastian Stan completamente transformados con la justa delicadeza para rozar la perfección pero no la exageración. 

Kameron Lennox and David Williams (along with the incredible hairstyling work of Barry Lee Moe) have been able to bring us back to a young Pam and Tommy and a whole nineties aesthetic worthy of admiration. Undoubtedly, behind costumes and makeup there is always a huge work, but when we talk about productions like this the pressure is greater, not only for the challenge itself (which is obvious) but for what is expected of it. And the result couldn't be more perfect: a Lily James and Sebastian Stan completely transformed with just the right delicacy to border on perfection but not exaggeration.
