SECRETOS DE VESTUARIO: DETRÁS DE 'A CINDERELLA STORY'

Si hay algo que nos gusta de los cuentos clásicos es toda la magia que los envuelve y, por ese mismo motivo, no es nada fácil trasladarlos a la gran pantalla: es importante mantener la esencia para que los espectadores puedan sumergirse en el mundo de fantasía que esperan.

Han sido muchos los cuentos de hadas que han tenido su versión en carne y hueso, pero hay una película que marcó un antes y un después en los live-actions cinematográficos. Sí, obviamente estamos hablando de 'A Cinderella Story'.

Lejos de representar fielmente la clásica historia de Cenicienta —cuento que nace en el antiguo Egipcio—, 'A Cinderella Story' nos muestra una versión moderna y completamente renovada de la vida de la protagonista, algo que, no solo logró atraer a millones de espectadores de todo el mundo, sino que inspiró a cinco secuelas que se realizaron en los años posteriores. 

Far from faithfully representing the classic Cinderella story —a tale that originated in ancient Egypt—, 'A Cinderella Story' shows us a modern and completely renewed version of the protagonist's life, something that not only attracted millions of viewers around the world, but also inspired five sequels that were made in the following years.

En esta nueva historia de Cenicienta se cambia el zapato perdido por un teléfono móvil, el tradicional baile real por una fiesta de Halloween y el apuesto príncipe por el deportista más popular del instituto. ¿Cómo no nos iba a encantar esta trama?

This new Cinderella story trades the lost shoe for a cell phone, the traditional royal ball for a Halloween party and the handsome prince for the most popular jock in high school. How could we not love this plot?

Hilary Duff es la actriz que da vida a Samantha, una joven obligada a trabajar en una cafetería, mientras tiene que lidiar con su madrastra y sus dos hermanastras. Y a pesar de que intenta sobrevivir al día a día regalándonos inspiradores outfits casuales, los que habéis visto la película estaréis de acuerdo conmigo cuando digo que LA ESCENA  que a todos se nos viene a la cabeza cuando pensamos en 'A Cinderella Story' es, ni más de ni menos, que la entrada de Hilary en la fiesta de Halloween con ese maravilloso vestido de cuento de hadas. Y para saber un poco más sobre el estilo de la protagonista y de cómo se escogió el precioso vestido del baile, he tenido el gran placer de hablar con Denise Wingate, la artista detrás de cada obra de arte estilística que vemos a lo largo de la película. 

Hilary Duff is the actress who gives life to Samantha, a young girl forced to work in a coffee shop, while having to deal with her stepmother and her two stepsisters. And although she tries to survive the day-to-day by giving us inspiring casual outfits, those of you who have seen the movie will agree with me when I say that THE SCENE that comes to mind when we think of 'A Cinderella Story' is, no more and no less, than Hilary's entrance at the Halloween party in that wonderful fairytale dress. And to find out a little more about the protagonist's style and how the gorgeous ball gown was chosen, I had the great pleasure of speaking with Denise Wingate, the artist behind every stylistic masterpiece we see throughout the film.

El estilo de Samantha reflejaba a la perfección su personalidad y su atareada rutina: trabajadora en la cafetería y estudiante en el instituto. ¿Cuál fue la inspiración para crear su vestuario? Denise nos lo explica: "¡Es difícil de creer que hayan pasado 17 años desde que se hizo 'A Cinderella Story'! El concepto original del vestuario de Samantha era que se sintiera cómoda en su propia piel, era un poco marimacho, le gustaba el béisbol y era muy trabajadora (en la cafetería). La mayoría de las veces iba en vaqueros y camisetas, y siempre llevaba zapatillas Converse".

Samantha's style perfectly reflected her personality and her busy routine: cafeteria worker and high school student. What was the inspiration for creating her wardrobe? Denise explains: "It is hard to believe that 17 years have gone by since making 'A Cinderella Story'! The original concept for Samantha’s costumes was that she was  comfortable in her own skin, a bit of a tomboy, loved baseball and was a hard worker (at the coffee shop). She mostly jeans and t shirts, and always wore Converse sneakers".

La diseñadora continúa: "Queríamos que fuera todo lo contrario a las otras adolescentes que se reunían allí y, sobre todo, que no se pareciera en nada a sus locas hermanastras (a las que me divertí muchísimo vistiendo."

The designer continues: "We wanted to make her the opposite of the other teen girls who hung out there and especially nothing like her crazy stepsisters (which I had sooo much fun dressing."

Uno de los looks de la película que a día de hoy sigue dejándonos boquiabiertos es el espectacular vestido con el que Samantha hace su gran entrada en la fiesta de Halloween: "Originalmente hicimos una versión del vestido de 'Cenicienta', el de la película [de Disney], utilizando un montón de capas azules iridiscentes, pero cuando lo probamos con la cámara, no me encantó. Los colores lo hacían parecer menos valioso (dicho esto, el vestido que la diseñadora de vestuario Sandy Powell hizo para Lily James en la versión cinematográfica de Cenicienta fue IMPRESIONANTE y una hermosa réplica del original). Al final pensamos que el blanco sería un color mejor y que destacaría mucho. No nos quedaba mucho tiempo antes de rodar la escena, (y necesitábamos dos de ellos para las escenas). Por suerte acabé encontrando un vestido impresionante de la diseñadora Monique Lhuiller y era PERFECTO. Cuando [Samantha] llega a la fiesta de Halloween, realmente hace una entrada", nos cuenta Denise.

One of the looks from the film that still leaves us speechless to this day is the spectacular dress in which Samantha makes her grand entrance at the Halloween party: "We originally made a version of the  original 'Cinderella' dress from the movie by using a lot of blue iridescent layers, but when we camera tested it, I didn’t love it. The colors made it look cheap to me (that being said the dress Costume Designer Sandy Powell made for Lily James in the movie version of Cinderella was STUNNING and a beautiful replica of the original). In the end we thought white would be a better color and just really stand out. We didn’t have a lot of time left before we were shooting the scene, (and we needed two of them for stunts). Luckily I ended up finding a stunning dress by the designer Monique Lhuiller and it was PERFECT. When she arrives at the Halloween party she really makes an entrance", Denise tells us.

Y aunque el vestido acaparó todas las miradas, no podemos olvidarnos de la increíble máscara que tapa parte del rostro de la protagonista: "Recuerdo haber hecho tantas máscaras diferentes para eso. Teníamos que encontrar una que ocultara su cara lo suficiente pero que nos permitiera ver sus ojos. Fue mucho más difícil de lo que se cree! Probamos muchas versiones diferentes", explica la diseñadora. 

And even though the dress got all the attention, we can't forget about the incredible mask that covers part of the protagonist's face: "I remember making so many different masks for that! We had to find one that would hide her face enough but still allowed us to see her eyes. It was a lot harder than you would think! We tried so many different versions", the designer explains.

Diecisiete años y cinco secuelas después, podemos decir que 'A Cinderella Story' sigue siendo una de las películas favoritas de toda una generación. Esta producción lo tiene todo: fantasía, un modernizado cuento de hadas, romance y un vestuario de ensueño. Cómo de impactante tiene que ser el vestuario de una película para que después de tanto tiempo sigamos reteniendo en nuestra memoria esa maravillosa entrada de Samantha o el mítico top azul con el que la protagonista le planta cara a su príncipe. Nada en esta producción hubiese sido lo mismo sin un vestuario que nos inspirara a soñar y a creer que, como demuestra Samantha a lo largo del film, con ganas y esfuerzo todo es posible. 

Seventeen years and five sequels later, we can say that 'A Cinderella Story' is still one of the favorite movies of a whole generation. This production has it all: fantasy, a modernized fairy tale, romance and dreamy costumes. Just imagine how impressive the wardrobe of a movie has to be for us to remember exactly that wonderful entrance of Samantha or the mythical blue top with which the protagonist faces her prince after so many years. Nothing in this production would have been the same without a wardrobe that inspires us to dream and to believe that, as Samantha shows throughout the film, with desire and effort anything is possible.
