Una entre un millón. Dicen que esa es la probabilidad de triunfar en la vida. Y aunque solo parezca cosa de suerte o de magia divina, la realidad es que no llegas y te mantienes en lo más alto simplemente por existir: se necesita esfuerzo y perseverancia. Y si hay una estrella admirada por esos dos factores y por llevar a sus espaldas una carrera ejemplar que la ha hecho brillar como la que más es, ni más ni menos, que la gran Lady Gaga.

And although it may seem a matter of luck or divine magic, the reality is that you don't reach and stay at the top simply by existing: it takes effort and perseverance. And if there is a star admired for these two factors and for having an exemplary career that has made her shine like the best, it is none other than the great Lady Gaga.

Cuando pensamos en la artista, se nos viene a la mente toda clase de hits como 'Born This Way', 'Bad Romance', 'Shallow', o 'Poker Face' (sí, podríamos seguir nombrando exitazos de Gaga durante horas), pero también nos resulta imposible no imaginárnosla con looks de lo más extravagantes y sorprendentes. Es una realidad que su estilo ha dividido a la opinión pública desde sus inicios, pero lo cierto es que Lady Gaga ha sido capaz de revolucionar el mundo de la moda desde el ámbito musical creando una identidad muy definida, algo que no todos los artistas pueden decir. Y para conocer un poco más el porqué de las decisiones de estilo de la cantante, he tenido la gran suerte de hablar con Perry Meek, su diseñador durante más de siete años. 

When we think about the artist, we think of all kinds of hits like 'Born This Way', 'Bad Romance', 'Shallow', or 'Poker Face' (yes, we could go on naming Gaga's hits for hours), but it is also impossible not to imagine her with the most extravagant and surprising looks. It is a reality that her style has divided public opinion since her beginnings, but the truth is that Lady Gaga has been able to revolutionize the fashion world from the music scene creating a very defined identity, something that not all artists can say. And to learn a little more about the singer's style choices, I had the good fortune to speak with Perry Meek, her designer for more than seven years.

Perry Meek, ganador de un Emmy por el diseño que Lady Gaga lució en RuPaul's Drag Race en 2017, ha trabajado con grandes artistas como Beyoncé, Spice Girls, Janet Jackson, Tina Turner, Cher o Mariah Carey. Meek fue el encargado no solo de diseñar el vestuario de Gaga para el 'ArtPop Tour' sino que ha sido el creador de los looks más icónicos de la cantante. ¿Quién recuerda el corsé de carne? ¿o los looks del vídeo de 'Judas'? ¿o el increíble lazo rosa en la cabeza mientras la artista interpretaba 'Marry The Night' al piano? Efectivamente, todas han sido obras de arte del reconocido diseñador.

Perry Meek, winner of an Emmy for the design that Lady Gaga wore on RuPaul's Drag Race in 2017, has worked with great artists such as Beyoncé, Spice Girls, Janet Jackson, Tina Turner, Cher or Mariah Carey. Meek was in charge not only of designing Gaga's wardrobe for the 'ArtPop Tour' but he has also been the creator of the singer's most iconic looks. Who remembers the meat corset and skirt? or the looks in the 'Judas' video? or the incredible pink bow on her head while the artist performed 'Marry The Night' at the piano? Indeed, they were all works of art by the renowned designer.

Uno de los vídeos musicales que más sensación causó entre los fans de la cantante fue 'Telephone', la canción que canta junto a Beyoncé. En el vídeo vemos a las protagonistas luciendo trajes increíbles, pero el que más impactó fue el conjunto con la bandera americana que lleva Gaga hacia el final del vídeo. ¿Cómo fue la creación de este look? Atentos a la respuesta de Perry Meek, porque seguro que os va a sorprender: "Ese look fue un diseño de última hora. El estilista del vídeo básicamente me dio una bandera americana y me dijo 'haz un traje con esto', así que lo monté en la parte trasera de un camión en medio del desierto en el lugar del rodaje".

One of the music videos that caused the biggest sensation among the singer's fans was 'Telephone', the song she sings with Beyoncé. In the video we see the protagonists wearing incredible outfits, but the most striking was the outfit with the American flag that Gaga wears towards the end of the video. How was the creation of this look? Stay tuned for Perry Meek's answer, because we're sure you'll be surprised: "It was a very last minute costume, the stylist of the video basically handed me an American flag and said 'here make an outfit out of this', so it was thrown together in the back of a truck in the middle of the desert on the site of the shoot".

Y aunque el conjunto con american vibes ya nos dejó bastante impactados, la verdad es que la cantante ha llevado outfits increíbles y completamente inviables a percepción de nuestra imaginación. ¿Queréis saber cuáles han sido los más difíciles de diseñar? Perry Meek nos lo cuenta: "El vestido de piano para la gira "Born This Way", en el que originalmente intentamos que el teclado funcionara, pero nunca lo conseguimos. También el vestido 'Bloody Mary', que originalmente se hizo para que empezara a sangrar a mitad de actuación, pero que después de un par de ensayos terminó quedándose blanco sin sangre, y era demasiado sucio para limpiarlo en el escenario".

And although the outfit with American vibes already left us quite speechless, the truth is that the singer has worn incredible outfits and completely unfeasible to the perception of our imagination. Do you want to know which have been the most difficult to design? Perry Meek tells us: "Either the piano dress for the Born This Way Tour where originally we were trying to get the keyboard to actually work but it never got figured out, or the Bloody Mary dress which originally was made to start bleeding halfway through but after a couple of dress rehearsals ended up just staying white with no blood as it was too messy to clean up on the stage".

Una de las giras visualmente más impresionantes, fue el 'ArtPop Tour'. Y aunque parezca que para crear semejantes looks los diseñadores disponen de todo el tiempo del mundo, la realidad es muy diferente: "Una vez más, nos apresuramos a crearlo todo, el concepto y la esencia se ideó en el piso de su apartamento [de Lady Gaga] de Nueva York y a partir de ahí fue un sprint rápido para tenerlo todo listo, lo juntamos todo en dos semanas y a contrarreloj", nos cuenta Perry Meek.

One of the most visually impressive tours was the 'ArtPop Tour'. And although it may seem that designers have all the time in the world to create such looks, the reality is quite different: "Once again we were very rushed for it to all be pulled together, the concept and mood was relayed on the floor of her NY apt and it was a fast sprint from there to get everything ready , from memory it was pulled together in about two weeks with round the clock working", Perry Meek tells us.

Perry Meek diseñó innumerables trajes para Lady Gaga, todos igual de increíbles y deslumbrantes, pero, ¿cuáles son sus favoritos? "Hay unos cuantos pero me gusta el traje de Drag Race por el que gané un Emmy, el traje de los Grammy donde interpretó 'Shallow' o el traje de látex de los Grammy de 'Born This Way'", confiesa el diseñador. 

Perry Meek designed countless outfits for Lady Gaga, all equally amazing and dazzling, but which are his favorites? "There are a few but I like the Drag race outfit that I won an Emmy for, or the Grammy outfit where she performed 'Shallow' or the born this way latex Grammy outfit", the designer confesses.

Y para acabar, es imposible hablar con Perry y no preguntarle por el icónico corsé y falda de carne que Lady Gaga lució sobre el escenario de su 'Born This Way Ball': "Se basó en el infame vestido de carne real [MTV Video Music Awards en 2010], pero queríamos algo más adaptado y ajustado y, por supuesto, tenía que ser hecho para soportar la gira, por lo que fue todo moldeado a partir de carne real y vertido con el caucho que luego permitió construir el diseño de la falda y el corsé. Fue muy lento de hacer y bastante pesado e incómodo, pero se veía increíble en el escenario", nos explica Perry.

And to finish, it's impossible to talk to Perry and not ask him about the iconic meat corset and skirt that Lady Gaga wore on stage at her 'Born This Way Ball': "It was based of the infamous real meat dress [MTV Video Music Awards 2010] but we wanted something more tailored and fitted and of course had to be made to withstand tour, so it was all molded from real meat and poured with rubber that was then constructed in the skirt and corset design. It was very time consuming to make and quite heavy and uncomfortable but looked amazing on stage", Perry tells us.

Whenever they announce that the artist is going to attend an awards show, we always wonder: will she perform, what song will she sing, but we also think about what outfit she is going to wear to leave us with our mouths open.
