SECRETOS DE VESTUARIO: DETRÁS DE 'OOPS I DID IT AGAIN' BY BRITNEY SPEARS

Oh baby, baby... estamos acostumbrados a hablar sobre el vestuario de películas y series: que si el vestido de la protagonista en su graduación del instituto, que si los trajes en los episodios de Halloween o ese espectacular vestido de novia en el episodio final de tu sitcom favorita. Sin embargo, hay otro género en el que el vestuario adquiere una vital importancia: los videoclips. 

Oh baby, baby... We are used to talking about the wardrobe of movies and series: whether it's the dress of the protagonist at her prom, the costumes in Halloween episodes, or that spectacular wedding dress in the final episode of your favorite sitcom. However, there is another genre where wardrobe takes on vital importance: music videos.

Los videoclips son toda una explosión narrativa que, si bien gira entorno a la canción interpretada por el artista, se tiene que complementar con otros factores que consigan llamar la atención del espectador. A pesar de ello, son muchas las ocasiones en las que el vestuario pasa a ser un elemento más del show y queda eclipsado colocándose en un segundo plano, muy lejos de convertirse en algo sobresaliente. Pero, ahí es donde está la gracia. Si todos los videoclips contasen con un traje icónico que se convirtiera en un referente atemporal y que marcara un antes y un después tanto en la industria como en la sociedad, significaría que ser original y trascendental es fácil, nada más lejos de la realidad. 

Music videos are a narrative explosion that, although it revolves around the song performed by the artist, must be complemented with other factors that get the viewer's attention. In spite of this, there are many occasions in which the wardrobe becomes just another element of the show and is overshadowed and placed in the background, far from becoming something outstanding. But that's where the fun lies. If every music video had an iconic costume that became a timeless reference and marked a before and after in both the industry and society, it would mean that being original and transcendental is easy, nothing further from the truth.

Y si hablamos de un traje icónico salido de uno de los videoclips más representativos de los 2000 ese es, sin lugar a duda, el mono de látex rojo lucido por Britney Spears en 'Oops I Did It Again'. Sin ir más lejos, este impactante —y arriesgado— outfit no solo ocupó en su día miles de páginas en revistas de todo el mundo, sino que, 21 años después, sigue estando presente gracias a innumerables fans que se han sumado a la experiencia de recrear el traje haciendo su propio homenaje a la cantante, entre ellas, algunas caras conocidas como Miley Cyrus o Thalia.

Without going any further, this amazing -and risky- outfit not only occupied thousands of pages in magazines around the world, but, 21 years later, it is still present thanks to countless fans who have joined the experience of recreating the costume making their own tribute to the singer, among them, some familiar faces like Miley Cyrus or Thalia.

And to find out how this famous latex suit was created and what it was like to dress Britney Spears in one of the key moments of her musical career, I had the honor and pleasure of speaking with Estee Stanley, the stylist responsible for this iconic (and revolutionary) creation. 

Los que hemos seguido la trayectoria de Britney Spears, sabemos que es una artista que se involucra al máximo en cada uno de sus proyectos, pero, ¿participó la cantante en la creación de este vestuario?: "Sí, ella [Britney] contribuyó: de hecho fue una colaboración entre yo, Britney y su diseñador de vestuario. Britney quería que este fuera un momento importante", nos cuenta Estee. 

Those of us who have followed Britney Spears' career know that she is an artist who is involved to the maximum in each of her projects, but did the singer participate in the creation of this wardrobe? "Yes, she contributed - it was a collaboration between myself, Britney, and her costume designer. Britney wanted it to be a major moment", Estee tells us.

Y vaya si lo fue. La repercusión de este traje cruzó no solo fronteras, sino que se ha mantenido en la memoria de todos nosotros dos décadas después del estreno del vídeo. Sin embargo, y a pesar de lo que podamos pensar, la creación del famoso mono de látex —llevado a cabo por Michael Bush— tuvo que hacerse contrarreloj. Estee Stanley nos lo explica: "Michael estaba realmente entusiasmado con ello, pero, desgraciadamente, fue una idea de última hora, así que tuvo que trabajar muy rápido. ¡Lo hizo fabulosamente bien y rápido para nosotros!"

And indeed it was. The repercussion of this suit not only crossed borders, but has remained in the memory of all of us two decades after the video's release. However, and despite what we may think, the creation of the famous latex jumpsuit -made by Michael Bush- had to be done against the clock. Estee Stanley explains it to us: "Michael was very excited about it - unfortunately, it was a last minute idea so he had to work fast and got it done fabulously and quickly for us!"

Si bien el traje de látex se llevó toda la atención del vídeo, es imposible olvidar el otro look monocromático en blanco que luce Britney: muy en la línea del traje rojo, same vibes, pero con ese toque sexy y angelical que tanto la caracteriza: "Queríamos que este traje también fuera muy monocromático y que tuviera que ver más con la personalidad de Britney que con la ropa. Todo el vestuario representa quién es ella en estas escenas del vídeo", nos cuenta la estilista. 

While the latex suit got all the attention in the video, it's impossible to forget Britney's other monochromatic white look: very much in line with the red suit, same vibes, but with that sexy and angelic touch that characterizes her so much: "We wanted to keep it very monochromatic and more about Britney than the clothes. The clothes represent who she is in these scenes", the stylist tells us.

'Oops I Did It Again' fue uno de los grandes éxitos de Britney. ¿Cómo fue participar en un momento tan icónico? "Fue muy emocionante estar en el plató con ella [Britney] porque sabíamos que la canción iba a ser un gran éxito", nos cuenta Estee. De hecho, hay entrevistas que documentan los días previos al estreno de la canción, en los que la propia cantante afirma que este single iba a ser incluso mejor que 'Baby One More Time', algo que parecía imposible. Pero si hay alguien que puede superarse a sí misma una y otra vez esa es Britney Spears y nos lo demostraría años después con éxitos como 'Toxic', 'Piece of Me' o 'Gimme More'. 

'Oops I Did It Again' was one of Britney's biggest hits. What was it like to participate in such an iconic moment? "It was really exciting to be on set with her because we knew the song was going to be a huge hit," Estee tells us. In fact, there are interviews documenting the days leading up to the song's release, in which the singer herself claims that this single was going to be even better than 'Baby One More Time', something that seemed impossible. But if there is someone who can surpass herself over and over again that is Britney Spears and she would prove it years later with hits like 'Toxic', 'Piece of Me' or 'Gimme More'.

Sin embargo, y a pesar de los increíbles outfits que ha lucido Britney en las dos últimas décadas, nada ni nadie ha logrado superar el icónico traje de 'Oops I Did It Again', que se ha perpetuado con fuerza como uno de los sellos estilísticos de la cantante. Si bien el éxito de la canción se podía intuir, quién iba a decirle a la princesa del pop que ese éxito se compartiría con la creación de un estilismo que no solo reafirmaría su personalidad a ojos de todo el mundo, sino que se convertiría en un símbolo eterno.  

However, despite the incredible outfits that Britney has worn over the last two decades, nothing and no one has managed to surpass the iconic outfit of 'Oops I Did It Again', which has been perpetuated as one of the singer's stylistic hallmarks. While the success of the song could be sensed, who would have told the pop princess that this success would be shared with the creation of an incredible costume that would not only reaffirm her personality in the eyes of the world but would become a timeless symbol.
