SECRETOS DE VESTUARIO: DETRÁS DE 'PRINCESS PROTECTION PROGRAM'

Selena y Demi. Demi y Selena. Hubo una época en la que las dos estrellas fueron completamente inseparables, tanto que, en la era dorada de Disney, protagonizaron una película juntas con una trama de lo más peculiar. ¿Quién se acuerda de Demi Lovato vestida con un precioso vestido de princesa amarillo o a Selena Gomez trabajando en la tienda de cebos? Todo un clásico para la generación Z. 

Selena and Demi. Demi and Selena. There was a time when the two stars were completely inseparable, so much so that, in the Disney era, they starred in a movie together with a very peculiar plot. Who remembers Demi Lovato dressed in a beautiful yellow princess dress or Selena Gomez working in the bait store? A classic for the Z generation.

'Princess Protection Program' se estrenó en Disney Channel en mayo de 2009 y consiguió, nada más y nada menos, que ocho millones de espectadores en su primera emisión. Sin duda alguna, la presencia de Demi Lovato y Selena Gomez en una misma película se consideró un acierto seguro, pero hubo muchos otros factores que garantizaron el éxito de la producción. 

'Princess Protection Program' premiered on Disney Channel in May 2009 and was watched by no less than eight million viewers on its first airing. Without a doubt, the presence of Demi Lovato and Selena Gomez in the same movie was considered a sure hit, but there were many other factors that guaranteed the success of the production.

En 'Princess Protection Program', Demi Lovato da vida a Rosalinda María Montoya Fioré, una princesa que se ve obligada a abandonar su reino por culpa de un golpe de estado. Sin embargo, será acogida y camuflada en el humilde hogar de Louisiana del general Mason, su salvador, y su hija Carter, encarnada por Selena Gomez. 

In 'Princess Protection Program', Demi Lovato plays Rosalinda Maria Montoya Fioré, a princess who is forced to leave her kingdom due to a coup d'état. However, she will be welcomed and camouflaged in the humble Louisiana home of General Mason, her savior, and his daughter Carter, played by Selena Gomez.

¿Y qué pasa cuando una princesa tiene que hacerse pasar por una chica normal y corriente? Pues que empieza la diversión. Rosalinda se ve obligada a dejar de lado sus sedas y sus comodidades para adaptarse a una vida mucho más sencilla, cosa que incluye, muy a su pesar, llevar vaqueros, camisetas y comer hamburguesas con las manos. Pero para eso tendrá a la mejor maestra de todas: Carter Mason, una chica humilde, trabajadora y, a primera vista, repelente a los vestidos. 

And what happens when a princess has to pretend to be an ordinary girl? Well, the fun begins. Rosalinda is forced to put aside her silks and her comforts to adapt to a much more simple life, which includes, much to her regret, wearing jeans, T-shirts and eating hamburgers with her hands. But for that she will have the best teacher of all: Carter Mason, a humble girl, hard-working and, at first sight, repellent to dresses.

No cabe duda de que ambos personajes protagonistas tienen una personalidad muy diferente, algo que se refleja a las mil maravillas en su vestuario. Y para saber un poco más sobre el estilo de ambas, he tenido el gran placer de hablar con Amy Stofsky, la diseñadora de vestuario de 'Princess Protection Program', y la responsable de que desde hace más de 10 años soñemos con querer el vestido de princesa de Rosalinda y no el de Cenicienta. 

There is no doubt that both main characters have a very different personality, something that is reflected perfectly in their wardrobe. And to know a little more about the style of both of them, I had the great pleasure of talking to Amy Stofsky, the costume designer of 'Princess Protection Program', and the one responsible for the fact that for more than 10 years we have been dreaming of wanting Rosalinda's princess dress instead of Cinderella's.

La trama principal de 'Princess Protection Program' empieza cuando Rosalinda llega a Louisina, disfrazada como una adolescente normal, al más puro estilo Carter Mason. ¿Cuál fue el punto de partida para los estilos de Carter y Rosalinda? Amy Stofsky nos lo explica: "Ambos personajes debían estar influenciados por el entorno y el estilo de vida de Louisiana.  No hay que perder de vista que eran adolescentes en la América rural; sin aspavientos ni complicaciones". 

The main plot of 'Princess Protection Program' begins when Rosalinda arrives in Louisina, 'disguised' as a normal teenager and has the opportunity to meet Carter. What was the starting point for Carter and Rosalinda's styles? Amy Stofsky explains: "Both characters needed to be influenced by the Louisiana environment and lifestyle. Teenage girls in rural America. No fuss no muss".

Aunque los outfits de diario de las protagonistas nos tienen enamorados durante toda la película, hay un vestido en concreto que somos incapaces de olvidar. Sí, obviamente me estoy refiriendo al vestido amarillo que Rosalinda lleva en su coronación: "Diseñamos el vestido amarillo para Rosalinda. La idea del traje era que Rosalinda tuviera un aspecto más regio, de mujer y joven a la vez. Para el palacio donde ella vive, el diseñador de producción utilizó mucho oro, así que nuestro objetivo era incorporar en el vestido el uso de los colores del palacio y adornar a la princesa con el color que realizara la sensación de realeza", nos cuenta la diseñadora. 

Although the protagonists' everyday outfits have us in love throughout the film, there is one dress in particular that we are unable to forget. Yes, I'm obviously referring to the yellow dress that Rosalinda wears at her coronation: "We built the yellow dress for Rosalinda. The idea for the costume was to make Rosalinda have both a regal and a young woman look. In the palace where Rosalinda lives, the production designer used a lot of gold. For Rosalinda's dress, our goal was to incorporate the usage of palace colors, and adorn the Princess in the color that would enhance a feeling of royalty", the designer tells us.

Y a pesar de la huella que nos dejó este vestido de Rosalinda, lo cierto es que las dos protagonistas lucen más atuendos increíbles. En el desenlace de la película, Rosalinda y Carter tienen que asistir a un baile de graduación, así que vemos a las dos adolescentes con vestidos impresionantes. ¿Fueron estos vestidos también diseñados para ellas? Amy Stofsky nos lo explica: "Los vestidos que se usaron en el baile fueron comprados.  Cuando rodamos, tuvimos la suerte de que era la época de los bailes de fin de curso, así que sólo teníamos que encontrar los que se ajustaran a nuestros personajes".

And despite the impression left by Rosalinda's dress, the truth is that the two main characters wear more incredible outfits. In the denouement of the film, Rosalinda and Carter have to attend their prom, so we see the two teenagers in amazing dresses. Were these dresses also designed for them? Amy Stofsky explains: "The dresses worn at the prom were both purchases.  It happened to be prom season when we were shooting, so it was just finding the right fit for our characters".

'Princess Protection Program' es una película que nos cautiva desde el primer momento, no solo por la trama o por las actuaciones de Demi y Selena, sino también por los increíbles escenarios donde todo se desarrolla. ¿Cómo recuerda Amy la experiencia de trabajar en esta producción? Ella misma nos lo cuenta: "Lo pasamos muy bien trabajando en esta película.  El reparto era estupendo y nuestra localización en Puerto Rico era preciosa".

'Princess Protection Program' is a film that captivates us from the first moment, not only for the plot or for Demi and Selena's performances, but also for the incredible scenery where it all takes place. How does Amy remember the experience of working on this production? She tells us herself: "We had a great time on the show. The cast was terrific, and our location in Puerto Rico was beautiful".

Cuando estamos viendo una película o una serie de televisión, la disfrutamos en el momento pero no somos conscientes del impacto que tiene sobre nosotros. Sin embargo, nos damos cuenta de ello cuando pasan más de 10 años y recordamos 'Princess Protection Program' como aquella película en la que vimos a Demi vestida como una princesa con un increíble vestido amarillo o a Selena luciendo unas camisetas coloridas y de los más características. O el divertido momento de probarse los vestidos para el baile de graduación. Quizá no somos capaces de recordar los detalles de las escenas con exactitud o qué pasaba al final de la película, pero nos resulta imposible olvidar estas prendas icónicas que marcaron un antes y un después para millones de jóvenes espectadores alrededor el mundo. 

When we are watching a movie or a TV series, we enjoy it in the moment but we are not aware of the impact it has on us. However, we realize it when more than 10 years go by and we remember 'Princess Protection Program' as that movie where we saw Demi dressed as a princess in an amazing yellow dress or Selena wearing some colorful and most characteristic t-shirts. Or the fun moment of trying on prom dresses. We may not be able to remember the details of the scenes exactly or what happened at the end of the movie, but it is impossible for us to forget these iconic outfits that marked a before and after for millions of young viewers around the world.
