SECRETOS DE VESTUARIO: DETRÁS DE 'THE WIZARDS RETURN: ALEX VS. ALEX'

Lo admitimos: llega octubre y sale a relucir nuestro lado más dark, pero no le llegamos ni a la suela de los zapatos a Selena Gomez en su papel de Alex villana en la película 'The Wizards Return: Alex vs. Alex'.

En 2013, Disney Channel estrenó 'The Wizards Return: Alex vs. Alex' una breve película en la que, en medio de un viaje familiar a Italia, Alex Russo (Selena Gomez), cansada de que la llamen egoísta e inmadura, decide hacer un hechizo y separar su parte buena de la mala. ¿El resultado? Dos Alex opuestas que lucharan hasta el final del film para conseguir sus propósitos. 

In 2013, Disney Channel released 'The Wizards Return: Alex vs. Alex' a short movie in which, in the middle of a family trip to Italy, Alex Russo (Selena Gomez), tired of being called selfish and immature, decides to cast a spell and separate her good side from the bad. The result? Two opposing Alex who will fight until the end of the film to achieve their goals.

Alex Russo, el personaje encarnado por Selena Gomez, ha pasado por distintas fases estilísticas a lo largo de las temporadas de la serie, pero no fue hasta en 'The Wizards Return' que la vimos con un traje de súper villana y con un look mucho más grunge del estilo boho al que nos tenía acostumbrados. ¿Cómo fue llevar a cabo esta transformación? Para saber un poco más sobre esto, hablamos con Marissa Borsetto, la diseñadora de vestuario de la película. 

Alex Russo, the character played by Selena Gomez, has gone through different stylistic phases throughout the seasons of the series, but it wasn't until 'The Wizards Return' that we saw her in a super villain outfit and with a much more grunge look than the boho style to which we were accustomed. What was it like to carry out this transformation? To find out a little more about it, we spoke with Marissa Borsetto, the film's costume designer.

Aunque los espectadores no notamos en absoluto la diferencia en el estilo de los protagonistas del film, Marissa Borsetto no siempre fue la creadora del vestuario de 'Wizards of Waverly Place'. ¿Cómo se documentó la diseñadora para seguir la misma línea estilística de los personajes? Ella misma nos lo cuenta: “Para la película ‘The Wizards Return: Alex vs. Alex’ hice muchas tablas de concepto e inspiración para cada uno de los personajes e intenté que tuvieran el mismo aspecto que en la serie de televisión. A Disney le gustan los colores más vivos y mantener un aspecto alegre. Me reuní con los productores, el director y Disney y finalmente llegamos a un acuerdo sobre cada personaje”. 

Although viewers do not notice the difference in the style of the main characters in the film, Marissa Borsetto was not always the creator of the costumes for 'Wizards of Waverly Place'. How did the designer document herself to follow the same stylistic line of the characters? She tells us herself: "For the movie 'The Wizards Return: Alex vs. Alex' I did many concept boards for each character and tried to keep them looking the same as they did in the television show. With Disney they like brighter colors and to keep things looking happy. I would have meetings with the producers show runner and director along with Disney and eventually we all came to an agreement with each character".

Lo más impactante de esta película es que vemos a dos Alex distintas, las cuales pudimos diferenciar básicamente por el vestuario: "En cuanto a la Alex villana, hicimos muchos bocetos y muestras de tela para asegurarnos de que teníamos la sensación adecuada para ella. Queríamos un elemento maligno junto con una superheroína algo sexy. Me inspiré en Catwoman y creo que encontramos una versión apropiada para su edad", nos explica Marisa. "En cuanto a las marcas, Disney es muy exigente con las marcas comerciales. Por lo general, tenemos que ir con ropa sin nombre que hace que sea muy difícil", sigue la diseñadora. 

The most striking thing about this film is that we see two different Alex, which we were able to differentiate basically by costume: "As for Alex we did many sketches and fabric swatches to make sure we had the right feel for her. We wanted an evil element along with a somewhat sexy superhero. I looked at Catwoman for inspiration and i think with that we found an age appropriate version of that", Marissa explains. "As far as brands Disney is very particular with any name brands. We usually have to go with no name clothing which makes it very difficult", the designer continues.

Si algo ha destacado siempre tanto en la serie como en las películas de 'Wizards of Waverly Place' es el original y pintoresco estilo de Harper (Jennifer Stone), la mejor amiga de Alex. Además, en esta película vemos como ambas lucen el mismo traje: un vestido con un estampado de langostas. "Los looks de Harper y Alex fueron muy divertidos y creativos. Harper ella siempre está tematizada, así que jugué con eso. Cuando me encontré con el estampado de langosta, me basé en él. Hicimos todas las piezas a medida y sentí que el color y el tema destacaban y daban un toque especial. Tuve que asegurarme de que se viera bien en las dos chicas [Jennifer y Selena] y realmente se logró", explica Marissa.

If something has always stood out both in the series and in the 'Wizards of Waverly Place' movies, it is the original and colorful style of Harper (Jennifer Stone), Alex's best friend. Also, in this movie we see how both of them, wear the same outfit: a dress with a lobster print. "The costumes for Harper and Alex were very fun and creative to do. With Harper she is always themed and so i played off of that. When i came across the lobster print i just built off of that. We custom made all the pieces and i felt the color and theme popped and really made a statement. I had to make sure it would look good on both girls and it really came together", Marissa explains.

El icónico vestido de langostas, el increíble traje de la Alex villana y todo un vestuario a la altura de la familia Russo. 'The Wizards Return: Alex vs. Alex' volvía a la pantalla un año después de haberse emitido el final de la serie, para darle a Alex una última lección. Y colorín colorado, fue así cómo 'Wizards of Waverly Place' se fue por todo lo alto, con una evolución plasmada en el vestuario de cada uno de los protagonistas, sin dejar atrás su esencia, y aportando esa visión única que solo puede reflejar Marissa; este es y será el recuerdo final que pertenecerá en la memoria (y corazón) de toda una generación de jóvenes fans. 

The iconic lobster dress, the incredible costume of the villainous Alex and a whole wardrobe that was up to of the Russo family. 'The Wizards Return: Alex vs. Alex' returned to the screen a year after the series finale aired, to teach Alex one last lesson. And that's how 'Wizards of Waverly Place' left in style, with an evolution reflected in the wardrobe of each of the main characters, without leaving behind its essence, and providing that unique vision that only Marissa can reflect; this is and will be the final memory that will belong in the memory (and heart) of a whole generation of young fans.
