Y aunque es cierto que las tramas de las telenovelas rozan el surrealismo, tienen todos los ingredientes para hacer que te enganches a ellas desde el primer capítulo.

Pero, ¿y si os digo que existe una serie norteamericana que cumple todos los requisitos de una telenovela? 'Jane the Virgin' es una adaptación de la telenovela venezolana 'Juana, la virgen', que cuenta la vida de Jane Villanueva (Gina Rodríguez), una joven religiosa que se queda embarazada después de ser artificialmente inseminada por error. Cuando decimos que el vestuario de 'Jane the Virgin' ha sido uno de los factores que ha contribuido a su éxito, lo decimos con conocimiento de causa. El personaje de Jane Villanueva ha sido un referente para muchísimas jóvenes latinas que, por desgracia, suelen verse estigmatizadas en una identidad televisiva (y estilística) que realmente no les corresponde. Con Jane, sin embargo, eso no ha pasado; desde el primer momento nos resultó facilísimo identificarnos con ella, con una chica real que lo mismo se ponía un precioso vestido, que un chándal para estar cómoda por casa: "Lo más importante es que quería que Jane pudiera identificarse. Muy a menudo vemos cuerpos y ropa en la televisión que son solo aspiraciones y no quería que Jane siguiera ese arquetipo de Hollywood. Me encanta que no fuera su objetivo en la vida verse 'perfecta' el 100% del tiempo", nos cuenta Rachel.
When we say that the wardrobe of 'Jane the Virgin' has been one of the factors that have contributed to its success, we mean it knowingly. The character of Jane Villanueva has been a benchmark for many young Latinas who, unfortunately, are often stigmatized in a television (and stylistic) identity that does not really correspond to them. With Jane, however, that has not happened; From the first moment, it was very easy for us to identify with her, with a real girl who either wore a beautiful dress or a tracksuit to be comfortable at home: "Most importantly I wanted Jane to be relatable. So often we see bodies & clothing on television that is only aspirational & I didn’t want Jane to follow that Hollywood archetype. I love that it wasn’t her goal in life to look “perfect” 100% of the time", Rachel tells us.

Jane Villanueva tiene un estilo fresco y femenino, y si pensamos en ella es imposible que no se nos vengan a la mente esos maravillosos vestidos estampados que nos han conquistado capítulo a capítulo. Y los fans del armario de Jane os estaréis preguntando, ¿de qué marca son? Atentos a la respuesta de la diseñadora: "Disfruté encontrando vestidos de Kohl's, Target y buenas piezas en oferta en tiendas de gama alta. No diría que tengo marcas favoritas, más bien tengo siluetas favoritas por las que estoy atenta. Siendo ese el ajuste y la llamarada, por supuesto. Hasta el día de hoy, mi ojo está entrenado para encontrar ese ajuste y destello en un mar de otras formas y siluetas".
Jane Villanueva has a fresh and feminine style, and if we think about her it's impossible that those wonderful printed dresses that have conquered us episode by episode do not come to our mind. And fans of Jane's wardrobe will be wondering, where can I find them? Attentive to the designer's response: "I enjoyed finding dresses from Kohl’s, Target & good sale pieces at higher end stores. I wouldn’t say I had favorite brands, rather I had favorite silhouettes that I kept my eye out for. That being the fit & flare of course. To this day my eye is trained to find that fit & flare in a sea of other shapes & silhouettes".

Without telling too many spoilers, the protagonist of 'Jane the Virgin', throughout the seasons, goes through a progressive but notorious evolution, because of innumerable ups and downs and situations that contribute to her maturity. What was it like to capture that emotional and personal evolution in Jane's wardrobe? "I always let the scripts lead me; I was constantly analyzing her evolution. As Jane grew from a young lady into a woman with a lot more experience her style reflected those changes", Rachel tells us.

Sin embargo, no solamente Jane nos deslumbra con outfits de infarto, sino que todo el elenco cuenta con un estilo muy definido e impecable. ¿Cuál fue el personaje con el que más disfrutó Rachel en términos de vestuario? "Petra. Siempre y para siempre Petra. ¡Yael disfrutó jugando a probarse ropa conmigo, así que nos divertimos y, además, ella luce la ropa como nadie más que yo haya vestido!", dice la diseñadora.

Los fans de la serie estarán de acuerdo conmigo cuando digo que 'Jane the Virgin' les ha aportado risas, lágrimas, impacto, sorpresa y, sobre todo, muchos momentos de alegría. Nos ha resultado muy fácil empatizar con los problemas y dramas de sus personajes y nos hemos enamorado una y otra vez de todos y cada uno de los maravillosos atuendos que se han ido mostrando episodio tras episodio. Rachel Sage Kunin ha dado vida al estilo de unos personajes que nos han conquistado con (muchos) vestidos de novia, disfraces alocados, impresionantes vestidos de fiesta y con looks de día a día que NUNCA dejaremos de intentar copiar y que permanecerán en nuestra memoria —y en nuestros corazones— por siempre.
