SECRETOS DE VESTUARIO: DETRÁS DE 'SHAKE IT UP'

No todas las series de televisión son capaces de contar con un vestuario tan característico que sea, incluso, prácticamente igual de importante que la propia trama. Si echamos la vista atrás y hacemos un esfuerzo por recordar las series que hemos visto, —que viviendo en la era del streaming seguro que no son pocas— no tendremos mucha dificultad en rememorar de qué iban o qué personajes salían en ellas. Sin embargo, son muy pocas —por no decir casi ninguna— las que recordamos por haber visto en ellas un vestuario distintivo e inimitable, de los que no se olvidan con facilidad. 

Not all television series are capable of having a wardrobe so characteristic that it's even practically as important as the plot itself. If we look back and make an effort to remember the series we have seen, —that living in the era of streaming, there are certainly not few— we will not have much difficulty in remembering what they were about or what characters were in them. However, there are very few —if not almost none— that we remember having seen in them a distinctive and inimitable wardrobe, of which they are not easily forgotten.

Y sintiéndolo mucho por el gigante Netflix, hay que reconocer que, en términos de estilismos inconfundibles, Disney se lleva la palma o, al menos, se la llevaba. Las series de la época dorada de Disney Channel —ya sabéis a las que me refiero—, aparte de tener tramas de lo más entretenidas, lograban que cada personaje fuese único. Y esto no solo se consigue con un buen tratamiento del personaje y guion; también con el vestuario. Disney siempre se ha caracterizado por proporcionar un contenido muy visual, dándole una gran importancia a los colores y las formas, algo que, en materia de vestuario, no iba a ser diferente. Disney Channel crea a sus personajes para que los asociemos a un estilo en concreto, convirtiéndolos así en personajes únicos e identificables. 

And feeling very sorry for the giant Netflix, it must be recognized that, in terms of unmistakable styles, Disney takes the cake or, at least, took it. The series from the golden age of Disney Channel  —you know what I mean—apart from having the most entertaining plots, they made each character unique. And this is not only achieved with a good treatment of the character and script; also with the costumes. Disney has always been characterized by providing highly visual content, giving great importance to colors and shapes, something that, in terms of costumes, was not going to be different. Disney Channel creates its characters so that we associate them with a specific style, thus making them unique and identifiable characters.

Es muy probable que si pensáis en Hannah Montana se os vengan a la mente lentejuelas o los colores plateados y dorados; si os digo Mitchie Torres seguramente penséis en blusas anchas y botas de flecos, y si os nombro a Cece y Rocky es posible que las asociéis con combinaciones coloridas, estampadas y arriesgadas, a veces algo locas, pero que funcionaban a las mil maravillas. 

It is very likely that if you think of Hannah Montana, sequins or silver and gold colors come to mind; If I tell you Mitchie Torres you probably think of wide blouses and fringed boots, and if I name you Cece and Rocky you may associate them with colorful, patterned and risky combinations, sometimes a bit crazy, but that worked like a charm.

Shake it Up fue una de las últimas series de la época dorada de Disney Channel. Con tres temporadas a sus espaldas, esta serie de televisión no dejó de sorprendernos desde el primer capítulo. Si bien la importancia de la trama recaía en el baile, el vestuario lo seguía muy de cerca: superposiciones de camisetas, encaje, tul, botas metalizadas, sombreros, guantes sin dedos... Vamos, un vestuario que no solo no pasaba desapercibido, sino que logró compartir protagonismo junto con el argumento principal de la serie: no solo veíamos Shake It Up por sus bailes —que era el 'gancho' de la producción—, sino que las ganas de ver un capítulo más eran promovidas por un: ¿qué ropa llevarán Cece y Rocky en el capítulo siguiente?

Shake it Up was one of the last series of the golden age of Disney Channel. With three seasons behind it, this television series did not stop surprising us from the first chapter. Although the importance of the plot fell on the dance, the costumes followed very closely: overlays of shirts, lace, tulle, metallic boots, hats, fingerless gloves... Come on, a wardrobe that not only did not go unnoticed, but it managed to share the limelight along with the main plot of the series: we not only watched Shake It Up for its dances —which was the 'hook' of the production—, and sometimes the desire to see another chapter was promoted by a: ¿What clothes will Cece and Rocky wear in the next chapter?

Las extravagantes combinaciones que nos fueron ganando episodio tras episodio fueron obra de Jessica Replansky, la diseñadora de la serie desde la primera temporada hasta la última. Jessica ha sido la asistente y coordinadora de vestuario de numerosas producciones, entre ellas Sexo en Nueva York, El Diablo Viste de Prada y Confesiones de una Compradora Compulsiva, trabajando codo con codo con la gran Patricia Field. En 2010 la diseñadora se adentró en la factoría Disney no solo encargándose íntegramente del vestuario de Shake It Up, sino también del vestuario de Austin & Ally y K.C Agente Especial, volviendo a trabajar con Zendaya. 

The extravagant combinations that were winning us episode after episode was the work of Jessica Replansky, the designer of the series from the first season to the last. Jessica has been the assistant and costume coordinator for numerous productions, including Sex and the City, The Devil Wears Prada, and Confessions of a Shopaholic, working closely with the great Patricia Field. In 2010, the designer entered the Disney factory, not only taking care of the costumes for Shake It Up, but also the costumes for Austin & Ally and K.C Special Agent, working with Zendaya again.

¿Cuál fue la inspiración de la diseñadora para el vestuario de Cece y Rocky? Jessica nos lo cuenta: "Para el estilo de Cece y Rocky, traté de fusionar el estilo callejero de Chicago de mediados de 2000 con la escena de baile adolescente hip hop. Los colores, la textura y el movimiento de la ropa fueron muy importantes a la hora de elegir sus looks".

What was the designer's inspiration for Cece and Rocky's wardrobe? Jessica tells us: "For Cece and Rocky's style, I tried to merge mid 2000's Chicago street style with the hip hop teen dance scene. Colors, texture, and clothing movement were all very important when choosing their looks."

Cece Jones (Bella Thorne), una chica pelirroja y más alocada, vestía con pantalones de cuadros y superposiciones de camisetas estampadas; Rocky Blue (Zendaya), una chica dulce y tímida, lucía mini faldas de tul con camisetas florales y chalecos. Pero si algo tenían en común las dos amigas bailarinas eran su gran afición por los complementos: gorros, grandes collares, anillos enormes y pendientes largos. "Los accesorios fueron clave para definir el estilo de Rocky y Cece. Sus looks nunca estaban completos sin joyas, guantes, gorros, etc. Sus complementos también ayudaban en sus movimientos como bailarinas. Me gustaba imaginar que recogían piezas de todo el mundo cuando viajaban con su espectáculo de danza, Shake it Up", nos cuenta la diseñadora. 

Cece Jones (Bella Thorne), a crazier redheaded girl, wore plaid pants and patterned T-shirt overlays; Rocky Blue (Zendaya), a sweet and shy girl, sported tulle mini skirts with floral tees and vests. But if the two dancing friends had something in common, it was their great fondness for accessories: hats, large necklaces, huge rings and long earrings. "Accessories were key in defining Rocky and Cece's style. Their looks were never complete without jewels, gloves, hats, etc. Their accessories also helped with their movements as dancers. I liked to imagine that they picked up pieces from all over the world when traveling with their dance show, Shake it Up", tell us the designer.

Aunque normalmente nos dejamos guiar por las tendencias a la hora de vestir, las protagonistas de Shake It Up creaban su propio estilo independientemente de lo que estaba de moda. Aún así, han pasado siete años desde el último capítulo de la serie (feel old yet?) y es imposible no preguntarle a Jessica cómo las vestiría a día de hoy: "Creo que Rocky y Cece definitivamente estarían de acuerdo con el estilo athleisure que es muy popular en 2020. Las opciones de ropa de ambos personajes fueron una mezcla de piezas de alta gama y casuales con toques masculinos y femeninos... un chaleco brillante con jeans con agujeros, o una falda de tutú con leggings rosas y botas de combate negras. En Shake it Up incursionamos en el mundo del atletismo (a veces usaban pantalones de chándal fuera de la casa) pero si Shake it Up fuera filmado hoy, estaríamos usando un estilo deportivo mucho más sorprendente", confiesa Jessica.

Although we are usually guided by trends when it comes to dressing, the protagonists of Shake It Up created their own style. Still, seven years have passed since the last chapter of the series (feel old yet?) And it is impossible not to ask Jessica how she would dress them today: "I think Rocky and Cece would definitely be on board with the athleisure style that is very popular in 2020. Both characters' clothing choices were a mixture of high end and casual pieces with both masculione and femine touches... a sparkly vest with holey jeans, or a tutu skirt with pink leggings and black combat boots. In Shake it Up, we dabbled in the athleisure world (they sometimes would wear sweatpants outside the house) but if Shake it Up were shot today, we would be using a lot more amazing workout/sweat style", confesses Jessica.

Como bien recordaréis, en Shake It Up el vestuario era un factor importante no solo en los atuendos del día a día de las protagonistas, sino también en los looks que se lucían sobre la pista de baile. Cada baile tenía una estética y los bailarines iban vestidos de acuerdo a ella: "Hubo tantos momentos divertidos en Shake it Up en términos de vestuario... no hay forma de que pueda elegir solo un atuendo. Me encantó cómo cada semana Cece y Rocy llegaban a expresarse a través de su propio estilo personal, pero también se convertían en un nuevo personaje mientras bailaban. Algunos de mis momentos favoritos de estilismo fueron cuando se subían al escenario y formaban parte de un concepto estético como Alicia en el país de maravillas o bailando 'These boots are made for walking'.¡Cada semana fue una aventura y un desafío en creatividad!, comenta la diseñadora.  

As you will well remember, in Shake It Up the wardrobe was an important factor not only in the day-to-day outfits of the protagonists, but also in the looks that were worn on the dance floor. Each dance had an aesthetic and the dancers were dressed according to it:  "There were so many fun moments on Shake it Up in terms of the wardrobe....there is no way I could pick just one outfit. I loved how every week, Cece and Rocy got to express themselves through their own personal style but also became a new character while dancing. Some of my favorite styling moments were when they performed a 'theme" on stage... Alice in Wonderland or These Boots Were Made for Walking. Every week was an adventure and a challenge in creativity!", says the designer.

Fuera y encima del escenario, Rocky y Cece no pararon de sorprendernos con looks inimaginables, con combinaciones locas que jamás se nos hubiesen pasado por la mente: ¿un tutú encima de unos pantalones vaqueros rotos combinados con una camiseta de flores superpuesta a una de encaje y un chaleco?, ¿en serio? Pues sí, en serio. Y lo mejor de todo es que por muy extravagantes que fueran, lo queríamos todo. Eran combinaciones que, aunque a simple vista parecieran una locura, estaban muy pero que muy trabajadas. Todo tenía un porqué y ninguna prenda estaba puesta al azar. Y un trabajo bien hecho se nota. Shake It Up logró sacarnos de nuestra zona de confort a muchos de nosotros, nos permitió experimentar más allá de los jeans y las sudaderas y nos abrió las puertas a todo un mundo estilístico que iba más allá de lo socialmente establecido y aceptado. Dicen que quien no arriesga no gana y Jessica Replansky ganó con matrícula de honor. 

Out and about on stage, Rocky and Cece did not stop surprising us with unimaginable looks, with crazy combinations that would never have crossed our mind: a tutu skirt over ripped jeans combined with a floral shirt overlaid to a lace t-shirt and a vest?, Really? Oh yes, seriously. And best of all, as extravagant as they were, we wanted it all. They were combinations that, although at first glance they seemed crazy, were very, very worked. Everything had a reason and no garment was random. And when you do a good job, it shows. Shake It Up managed to get many of us out of our comfort zone, allowed us to experiment beyond jeans and sweatshirts and opened the doors to a whole stylistic world that went beyond the socially established and accepted. They say that who doesn’t risk, doesn’t win, and Jessica Replansky won with honors.
